Peter Burling (sailor)
Peter Burling (born 1 January 1991) is a New Zealand sailor who won the silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics as helm in the 49er class alongside Blair Tuke.
Burling (then aged 21) was the youngest 49er sailor at the 2012 London Olympics. Their silver medal was New Zealand's 100th Olympic medal. Burling and Tuke were the first sailors to represent New Zealand in the 49er at the Olympics since 2000.
In November 2015 the International Sailing Federation announced that Burling and Tuke were the ISAF Rolex World Male Sailors of the year.
Burling and Tuke are the first sailors to win 4 consecutive 49er class World Championships (2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016). Burling is also the current World Champion in the International Moth (2015). He is the helmsman for Emirates Team New Zealand's 2017 Americas Cup campaign.
Early career
Burling started sailing in the Welcome Bay estuary near his home in Tauranga, New Zealand, at the age of six in an old wooden optimist called Jellytip. At the age of eight, he joined Tauranga Yacht Club and started competing. He sailed in his first Optimist nationals at age 9. At the age of 11 in 2002, Burling finished 2nd in the New Zealand Optimist Nationals (under-16). He competed in the 2002 Optimist World Championships in Texas at the age of 11.
