The Pescara Circuit was a 16.032 miles (25.8 km) road race course near Pescara, Italy.
The track boasted two long straights between villages, as well as demanding corners in the seaside town. The roads were both narrow and bumpy, and the staggering 16-mile (26 km) length was the longest of any open-wheel championship event. Like many long circuits (such as the original Nürburgring and Spa-Francorchamps circuits) Pescara was extremely dangerous. Many racing historians consider Pescara to be the most dangerous racing circuit ever devised.[citation needed]
The first race took place in 1924 and non-Championship Formula One races followed in the early 1950s, before the circuit was eventually included in the official Formula One World Championship in 1957. The Pescara Grand Prix drew in excess of 200,000 spectators, and remains the longest circuit in terms of lap distance ever to stage a Formula One Grand Prix.
It was the first F1 circuit with an artificial chicane; the chicane before the start-finish straight was built in 1934 to reduce speed in the pits.
The track's last race was a four hour World Sportscar Championship race in 1961, won by Lorenzo Bandini and Giorgio Scarlatti. After that race the circuit was permanently retired as a racing venue as it was impossible for the organizers to guarantee the safety of drivers and spectators.

Pescara [peˈskaːra] 
listen is the capital city of the Province of Pescara, in the Abruzzo region of Italy. As of 1 January 2007 it was the most populated city within Abruzzo at 123,059 residents, approximately 450,000 including the surrounding metropolitan area. Located on the Adriatic coast at the mouth of the Aterno-Pescara River, the present-day municipality was formed in 1927 joining the municipalities of Pescara, the part of the city to the south of the river, and Castellamare Adriatico, the part of the city to the north of the river. The surrounding area was formed into the province of Pescara. The poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, a native of Pescara, was a major sponsor for the creation of the new city.
The main commercial street of the city is Corso Umberto I, which runs from Piazza della Republica and reaches the seacoast at Piazza Primo Maggio. The rectangle that it forms with Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Via Nicola Fabrizi encloses the main shopping district, where several of the best fashion shops are located. Corso Manthonè, the course of the old Pescara has, for many years, been the center of the nightlife of the city. City hall and the administration of the province are in Piazza Italia, near the river, and in the area between here and the faculties of Economics, Architecture, Foreign Languages and Literature of G. d'Annunzio University to the south, a business district has grown up over the years. To the immediate south of the mouth of the river is the marina. Pescara has also an important international airport, called Abruzzo Airport and one of the most important and major touristic ports of Adriatic Sea and Italy, the Port of Pescara.

The province of Pescara (Italian: provincia di Pescara) is a province in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Its provincial capital is the city Pescara, which has a population of 121,366 inhabitants. As of 2015, it has a total population of 322,759 inhabitants over an area of 1,230.33 square kilometres (475.03 sq mi), giving it a population density of 262.34 inhabitants per square kilometre. The provincial president is Antonio Di Marco and the province contains 46 comuni.
History
Pescara's first indicators of settlement date to 1500 BCE, but it is unknown which tribe first settled in the city. It was conquered by the Romans in 214 BCE and remained "Aternum" after the city allied itself with Punic Carthaginian military commander Hannibal. The Romans developed the city and it became an important location for shipping and trade occurring between the Balkans and Rome; the Romans made the city of Pescara the capital of the Valeria region. During the barbarian raids it was almost completely destroyed, and it developed into a fishing village named Piscaria.
