Perth Airport

Perth Airport (IATA: PER, ICAO: YPPH) is a domestic and international airport serving Perth, the capital and largest city of Western Australia. It is located in the eponymous suburb Perth Airport and is adjacent to the suburbs of Belmont and Redcliffe (to the west).

Since 1997, it has been operated by Perth Airport Pty Limited, a private company (formerly Westralia Airports Corporation Pty Ltd) under a 99-year lease from the Commonwealth Government. It is regarded as Australia's most versatile airport. Perth Airport is a privately owned company with more than 75% of shares held for the benefit of Australian superannuants.

It is the fourth busiest airport in Australia and services Australasian and Indian Ocean destinations, as well as Johannesburg, Auckland, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Guangzhou, Doha, Hong Kong and Christchurch.

The airport has seen strong passenger growth in the last few years, primarily due to the state's prolonged mining boom and an increase in traffic from international low-cost carrier airlines. In the year ended June 2012, Perth Airport experienced passenger growth of 11.7% internationally and 6.9% domestically, resulting in an overall increase of 10.3% was recorded.

Perth Airport (IATA: PSL, ICAO: EGPT) is a general aviation airport located at New Scone, 3 nautical miles (5.6 km; 3.5 mi) northeast of Perth, Scotland. The airport used by private and business aircraft, and for pilot training. There are no commercial scheduled flights from the airport.

Perth Aerodrome has a CAA Ordinary Licence (Number P823) that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction as authorised by the licensee (Morris Leslie Limited).

History

The airport opened in 1936 as Scone Aerodrome. A flight training school, training military pilots, was established by Airwork Ltd shortly after the airport was opened. Before the war a number of scheduled airline services operated from Perth to various domestic locations. During the war 309 and 666 Squadrons from the Royal Air Force used the aerodrome. After the war Airwork moved into civilian pilot training.

By 1960 Airwork acquired Air Service Training (AST) an engineering training school, which it relocated from the south of England to the airport. The whole operation took on the AST name. AST gained a world wide reputation for aviation training, being known as Britain's Air University. Students of more than 100 countries have been trained at Perth. Following a worldwide downturn in aviation, AST pulled out of pilot training in 1996. The site was then bought by Morris Leslie Ltd.

Perth (ⁱ/ˈpɜːrθ/; Scottish Gaelic: Peairt [ˈpʰɛuɾt̪]) is a city in central Scotland, located on the banks of the River Tay. It is the administrative centre of Perth and Kinross council area and the historic county of Perthshire. According to the preliminary 2011 census results Perth, including its immediate suburbs, has a population of 50,000. Perth has been known as The Fair City since the publication of the story Fair Maid of Perth by Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott in 1828. During the later medieval period the city was also called St John's Toun or Saint Johnstoun by its inhabitants in reference to the main church dedicated to St John the Baptist. This name is preserved by the city's football team, St Johnstone F.C.

The name Perth comes from a Pictish word for wood or copse. There has been a settlement at Perth since prehistoric times, on a natural mound raised slightly above the flood plain of the Tay, where the river could be crossed at low tide. The area surrounding the modern city is known to have been occupied since Mesolithic hunter-gatherers arrived more than 8000 years ago. Nearby Neolithic standing stones and circles also exist, dating from about 4000 BC, following the introduction of farming in the area.
