Per mille

A per mille (from Latin per mīlle, "in each thousand"), also spelled per mil,per mill,permil,permill, or permille is a sign indicating parts per thousand. Per mil should not be confused with parts per million (ppm).

The sign is written ‰, which looks like a percent sign (%) with an extra zero in the divisor. It is included in the General Punctuation block of Unicode characters: U+2030 ‰ PER MILLE SIGN (HTML ‰ · ‰). It is accessible in Windows using ALT+0137.

The term occurs so rarely in English that major dictionaries do not agree on the spelling or pronunciation even within a single dialect of English and some major dictionaries such as Macmillan and Longman do not even contain an entry. The term is more common in other European languages where it is used in contexts, such as blood alcohol content, that are usually expressed as a percentage in English-speaking countries.

Mil Helicopters (Russian: Миль) is the short name of the Soviet Russian helicopter manufacturer Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant (Russian: Московский вертолётный завод им. М.Л. Миля) (design bureau prefix Mi), named after the constructor Mikhail Mil. Mil participates in the Euromil joint venture with Eurocopter.

Mil merged with Kamov and Rostvertol to form Oboronprom Corp in 2006. The Mil brand name has been retained, though the new company dropped overlapping product lines.

Jan Milíč

Jan Milíč z Kroměříže (Czech pronunciation: [ˈmɪliːtʃ]; Latin: Ioannes Milicius; German: Johann Militsch) (died June 29, 1374) was a Czech Catholic priest and the most influential preacher of the emerging Bohemian Reformation in the 14th century. Together with other Bohemian preachers and writers of that time, he paved in a certain sense the way for the reforming activity of Jan Hus.

Life

Not much is known of Milíč's early life. He was born in Kroměříž, Moravia (part of the Bohemian Crown). The date of his birth is not known. He was in holy orders in 1350. From 1358 to 1360 he served as registrar and from 1360 to 1362 as corrector at the Imperial Chancery of Charles IV, whom he accompanied into Germany several times. In October 1362 received a canonry in the cathedral of Prague along with the dignity of archdeacon. In December 1363 he resigned all his appointments that he might become a preacher pure and simple; he addressed scholars in Latin, and (an innovation) the laity in their native Czech, or in German, which he learnt for the purpose.

Per (film)

Per is a 1975 Danish drama film directed by Hans Kristensen. The film was selected as the Danish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 48th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.Agneta Ekmanner received the Bodil Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in the film.

Period (gene)

Period (per) is a gene located on the X chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster. Oscillations in levels of both per transcript and its corresponding protein PER have a period of approximately 24 hours and together play a central role in the molecular mechanism of the Drosophila biological clock driving circadian rhythms in eclosion and locomotor activity. Mutations in the per gene can shorten (per^S), lengthen (per^L), and even abolish (per⁰) the period of the circadian rhythm.

Discovery

The period gene and three mutants (per^S, per^L, and per⁰) were isolated in an EMS mutagenesis screen by Ronald Konopka and Seymour Benzer in 1971. The per^S, per^L, and per⁰ mutations were found to complement each other, so it was concluded that the three phenotypes were due to mutations in the same gene. The discovery of mutants that altered the period of circadian rhythms in eclosion and locomotor activity (per^S and per^L) indicated the role of the per gene in the clock itself and not an output pathway. The period gene was first sequenced in 1984 by Michael Rosbash and colleagues. In 1998, it was discovered that per produces two transcripts (differing only by the alternative splicing of a single untranslated intron) which both encode the PER protein.

PeR

PeR that stands for "Please explain the Rhythm" is a Latvian pop and beatboxing band formed in 2007. The original line-up was Ralfs Eilands, Emīls Vegners, and Pēteris Upenieks. Vegners left the band in 2007 and was replaced by Edmunds Rasmanis. But when Upelnieks left the trio in 2011, he was not replaced, rendering the band a duo consisting of just Eilands and Rasmanis. After three failed attempts in earlier years to represent Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest, PeR won the 2013 Dziesma contest and represented the country in the 2013 Contest with the song "Here We Go".

Background

Early years (2007–2008)

The band was founded in 2007, with original members; Ralfs Eilands, Emīls Vegners, and Pēteris Upenieks. On 21 July 2007, the band first appeared and performed on Dziesma manai paaudzei, the Latvian music festival. After the festival, the band travelled to Moscow, Russia, to compete with other artists on the talent show Minuta Slavy (Minute of Fame), with the band coming in fourth place during voting. The band returned to Latvia where they received an invitation to participate in the annual music event Bildes 2007. This was the last event with the original members.
