Pennington, South Australia

Pennington is a northern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, located about 10km from the Adelaide city centre. It is located in the City of Charles Sturt.

The suburb is residential, apart from a light industrial pocket to the south.

History

The area now including Pennington was subdivided in 1909 by Captain Alfred Hodgeman, who named a section after his wife, the former Helen Pennington. The Pennington Post Office opened on 1 May 1939 and closed in 1997.

Demographics

The 2006 Census by the Australian Bureau of Statistics counted 3,601 persons in Pennington on census night. Of these, 49.7% were male (and 50.3% were female).

The majority of residents (61.2%) are of Australian birth, with other common census responses being Vietnam (11.2%) and England (3.0%).

The age distribution of Pennington residents is comparable to that of the greater Australian population. 66.9% of residents were over 25 years in 2006, compared to the Australian average of 66.5%; (and 33.1% were younger than 25 years, compared to the Australian average of 33.5%).

Pennington is a borough in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 2,585, reflecting a decline of 111 (-4.1%) from the 2,696 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 159 (+6.3%) from the 2,537 counted in the 1990 Census.

History

According to an 1883 history, "the first name of the village was Queenstown, which was given it in honor of Queen Anne. Later it was by some, in derision of its comparative insignificance, Pennytown, and as early as 1747 it began to be called Pennington." The name "Penington" was already known in the area, as Edward Penington (1667-1701), son of the British Quaker leader Isaac Penington, was appointed by his kinsman William Penn as Surveyor General of Pennsylvania. His father-in-law was a longtime leader, including as Governor, of the province of West Jersey, where Edward married.Henry Gannett attributes the borough's name to colonial governors from the Pennington family.
