Penn, Buckinghamshire

Penn is a village and civil parish in the Chiltern district in Buckinghamshire, England, about 3 miles (4.8 km) north-west of Beaconsfield and 4 miles (6.4 km) east of High Wycombe. The parish, containing Penn village and the hamlets of Penn Street, Knotty Green and Forty Green, plus Winchmore Hill covers 3,991 acres (1615 hectares).

History

The parish name was originally Brythonic and meant hill: Penn village stands on a particular promontory of the Chiltern Hills, and from the tower of the Holy Trinity Church in the village it is supposedly possible to see into eight other counties. There is also a beacon hill with a signal post on it in the village boundary.

Segraves Manor, the principal manor in Penn, belonged to the Penn family. Sybil Penn, wife of David, was dry nurse and foster mother to King Edward VI and Lady of the Bed Chamber to his sister Queen Elizabeth I. William Penn (after whose father, Admiral Sir William Penn, Pennsylvania is named) erroneously believed himself to be a descendant of this family. However, in 1735 the manor passed from the unmarried Roger Penn to his only heir and sister, who was married to Lord Curzon. Penbury Grove House was built in 1902 by the American engineer Horace Field Parshall to be a replica of Pennsbury Manor, William Penn’s house in Pennsylvania.

Penn Street (SEPTA Route 102 station)

Penn Street is a stop on the SEPTA Route 102 (Sharon Hill) trolley in Clifton Heights, Pennsylvania. It is officially located near Penn Street & Broadway Avenue, although the actual location on Penn Street is halfway between Broadway & Berkley Avenues. Because the station runs through a residential neighborhood, no parking is available.

Trolleys arriving at this station travel between 69th Street Terminal in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania and Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania. The tracks cross all three of the streets mentioned above. They run directly south before curving to the southwest as they cross the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Ogden Street. At Penn Street itself, there are two platforms, one on the northeast corner of the crossing, and another on the southwest corner of the crossing. The southwest platform runs in front of a small children's playground on the northwest corner of Penn Street and Berkley Avenue, and contains a small open acrylic glass shelter. The tracks cross Berkley Avenue east of the intersection of a cul-de-sac, before leaving the right-of-way to run along Springfield Road.
