Peggy Sue
"Peggy Sue" is a rock and roll song written by Buddy Holly, Jerry Allison, and Norman Petty, and originally performed, recorded and released as a single by Holly in early July of 1957. The Crickets are not mentioned on the single (Coral 9-61885) but both Joe B. Mauldin (string bass) and Jerry Allison (drums) are on the recording. The song was also released on Buddy Holly's eponymous 1958 album. The song is ranked #197 on the Rolling Stone magazine's 2010 list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
The song was originally called "Cindy Lou", and was named for Buddy's niece, the daughter of his sister Pat Holley Kaiter. The title was later changed to "Peggy Sue" in reference to Crickets drummer Jerry Allison's girlfriend (and future wife), Peggy Sue Gerron, with whom he had recently had a temporary breakup.
Appropriately, Allison played a prominent role in the production of the song, playing paradiddles on the drums throughout the song, the drums' sound rhythmically fading in and out as a result of real-time engineering techniques by the producer, Norm Petty. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum placed the song on its list of the "songs that shaped rock and roll".
Cheshire Cat (Blink-182 album)
Cheshire Cat is the debut studio album by the American rock band Blink-182. Recorded at Westbeach Recorders in Los Angeles and produced by Otis Barthoulameu and the band themselves, the album was released on February 17, 1995 through local independent record label Cargo Music. The trio, composed of guitarist Tom DeLonge, bassist Mark Hoppus, and drummer Scott Raynor, formed in 1992 and recorded three demos that impressed the San Diego-based Cargo. In addition, their reputation as an irreverent local live act at venues such as SOMA alerted the label, which was trying to expand into different genres.
Cargo were still not in a position to offer more than a few days' worth of finances to record the album, and so the band recorded under financial constraints at Westbeach. Ten Foot Pole member Steve Kravac engineered the recording and advised the trio to record additional overdubs. As such, the band spent an additional week re-recording several tracks at Santee, California's Doubletime Studios. The record was originally released with the band's name as Blink, until an Irish band of the same name threatened legal action, after which the band appended "-182" to the end of their name.
Peggy Sue (band)
Peggy Sue is an English indie pop/indie folk band from Brighton. The band has toured with a number of well-known indie artists including Mumford & Sons, The Maccabees, First Aid Kit and Jack White.
History
Peggy Sue was formerly known as Peggy Sue and the Pirates and Peggy Sue and the Pictures. In June 2008, the band announced that they were shortening their name from Peggy Sue and the Pirates to just Peggy Sue. The band have also released music under the name of Peggy Sue and the Pictures, a collaboration with Left with Pictures, and Peggy Sue and Les Triplettes.
On 10 April 2009, it was announced that Peggy Sue had signed to US-based Yep Roc Records, and the label was releasing Body Parts EP for free.
On 9 December 2009, Peggy Sue signed with Wichita Recordings, and the label released the band's debut album Fossils and Other Phantoms in April 2010.
On 12 September 2011, the second album Acrobats came out on Wichita Recordings, to a generally positive critical response.
In 2011, the band was invited to perform a live soundtrack to a film at a temporary cinema in Hackney, East London. They chose Scorpio Rising, mostly because of its groundbreaking rock n' roll/doo wop soundtrack. The band's subsequent album "Peggy Sue Play the Songs of Scorpio Rising" was released 18 September 2012 via Yep Roc Records and features 12 new arrangements of songs from the 1963 Kenneth Anger cult classic.
