PBA-FM

PBA-FM 89.7 (call sign: 5PBA) is a community radio station in Adelaide, South Australia, and broadcasts to the Northern Suburbs.

History

PBA-FM is operated by the Para Broadcasters Association Inc, which was established in 1979. Full time broadcasting began in 1983.

The station was originally located at the Salisbury Teachers College which later became the South Australian College of Advanced Education and then the University of South Australia Salisbury campus. An early initiative in the station's history was the establishment of Foundation Studios, which gave local artists an affordable facility to have their music professionally recorded. Foundation Studios was closed in 1989.

In 2005 plans began to relocate the station after the former campus land was purchased for a housing development. With help from the Salisbury Council and the housing developers, the station relocated to Wiltshire Street in Salisbury on 4 August 2007, as part of a new community complex.

Format

PBA-FM airs over 60 diverse programs each week, including several multicultural shows and non English speaking programs. Most programs are presented by local volunteers and the station also allows community groups to broadcast programs for a small fee.

WPBA (TV)

WPBA (or simply PBA; channel 30.1, DTV 21) is one of two PBS-member TV stations in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The callsign stands for Public Broadcasting Atlanta and it is counterpart to WABE FM 90.1, the Atlanta area's local National Public Radio station. Both are licensed to and operated by the Atlanta Public Schools. The two stations share a studio on Bismark Road in the Morningside-Lenox Park neighborhood of Atlanta.

It is the only PBS station in Georgia not run by Georgia Public Broadcasting as part of the GPB television network. There is some duplication (but only rarely simulcasting) of programming with GPB primary station WGTV. Unlike WGTV, WPBA datacasts UpdateTV, an over-the-air programming service which updates the firmware on some brands of ATSC tuners, via the PBS National Datacast network, thus being able to receive the station will benefit owners of those devices. Conversely, WPBA is also one of the few PBS stations not to broadcast any digital subchannels, possibly because some of the bitrate is occupied by datacasting (WGTV operates two subchannels on its frequency, serving the area). The station has also datacast TV Guide On Screen since the beginning of October 2009, after CBS affiliate WGCL-TV ended the service following technical issues the service caused for some viewers with certain DTV converter set-top boxes.

Philippine Basketball Association

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is a men's professional basketball league in the Philippines composed of twelve company-branded franchised teams. It is the first professional basketball league in Asia and is the second oldest continuously existing in the world after the NBA. The league's regulations are a hybrid of rules from the NBA.

The league played its first game at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City on April 9, 1975. Their main offices are located along Eulogio Rodriguez Jr. Avenue (C-5 road), Eastwood City, Libis, Quezon City. The league is currently headed by commissioner Chito Narvasa.

History

The Philippine Basketball Association was founded when nine teams left the now-defunct Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA), which was tightly controlled by the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP), the FIBA-recognized national association at the time. With the BAP controlling the MICAA, the league was de jure amateur, as players were only paid allowances. This is much like what was done in other countries to circumvent the amateur requirement and to play in FIBA-sanctioned tournaments such as the Olympics. MICAA team owners are not pleased on how BAP, then led by Gonzalo "Lito" Puyat are taking away their players to join the national team without consulting them first. The teams that bolted away from the MICAA are the Carrier Weathermakers, Crispa Redmanizers, Mariwasa-Noritake Porcelainmakers, Presto Ice Cream, Royal Tru-Orange, Seven-Up Uncolas, Tanduay Distillery, Toyota Comets and the U/Tex Weavers. Leopoldo Prieto, the coach for the Philippines at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, was appointed as the first commissioner and Emerson Coseteng of Mariwasa-Noritake was chosen as the first president of the league's Board of Governors. The first game of the league was held at the Araneta Coliseum on April 9, 1975, featuring Mariwasa-Noritake and Concepcion Carrier.
