Slut

Slut is a term for a woman or girl who is considered to have loose sexual morals or who is sexually promiscuous. It is generally used as an insult, sexual slur or offensive term of disparagement (slut shaming). It originally meant "a dirty, slovenly woman", and is only rarely used to refer to men, generally requiring clarification by use of the terms male slut or man whore.

The first recorded use of the word was in Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales. He says, "Why is thy lord so sluttish, I thee pray, And is of power better clothes to bey." He is referring to the man's untidy appearance. The word has also been used to refer to dust bunnies, which were called "slut bunnies". There have been attempts to reclaim the word for girls and women, and some individuals embrace the title as a source of pride.

Etymology, common usages and synonyms

The common denotative meanings are a sexually promiscuous woman, or "an immoral or dissolute woman; prostitute." These definitions identify a slut as a person of low character—a person who lacks the ability or chooses not to exercise a power of discernment to order their affairs, similar to terms used for men, such as a cad, rake, womanizer, stud, player, male slut or man whore. The adjective slutty carries a similar connotation, but can be applied both to people and to clothing and accessories, such as Halloween costumes. The lack of a comparably popular term for men highlights the double standard in societal expectations between males and females.

Slag (Transformers)

Slag is the name of several fictional characters in the Transformers franchise. He is a Dinobot. In 2007, it was realized that "slag" is a swear word in the United Kingdom (as well as post-Beast Wars Transformers culture, though the real-life term is more of a sexual nature), which might have a negative effect on toy sales. This is referenced in the Transformers Animated series when Scrapper says he was originally going to call Snarl "Slag", but feared that the Dinobot had taken it as an insult. In Transformers: Fall of Cybertron and Transformers: Age of Extinction, Slag is renamed Slug.

Slag (Scories in Quebec, Tricex in Italy) is very tough, strong and possesses impressive firepower. In dinosaur mode, Slag can spew from his mouth a bolt of 3,000 degrees Celsius flame up to 80 feet (25 m) 2 degrees to left. He possesses enormous strength and can shatter a brick building with a single blow from his armored head. His horns can also shoot high powered lasers. In robot mode he carries a high-energy laser rifle, an energo sword and a rocket poom.

Slag (welding)

Welding slag is a form of slag, or vitreous material produced as a byproduct of some arc welding processes, most specifically shielded metal arc welding (also known as stick welding), submerged arc welding, and flux-cored arc welding. Slag is formed when flux, the solid shielding material used in the welding process, melts in or on top of the weld zone. Slag is the solidified remaining flux after the weld area cools.

Flux

Welding flux is a combination of carbonate and silicate materials used in welding processes to shield the weld from atmospheric gases. When the heat of the weld zone reaches the flux, the flux melts and outgasses. The gases produced push the atmospheric gas back, preventing oxidation (and reactions with nitrogen).

The melted flux covers the molten metal in the weld zone. Flux materials are chosen so that the density of the melted flux / slag is lower than that of the metal being welded, so that the flux floats to the top of the weld puddle and leaves pure or nearly pure metal to solidify below.

Overview

Things get crazy at the 4077th when payday comes around, and everybody is spending money and getting into debt with everyone else. "Hot Lips" tricks Frank Burns into giving her a real pearl necklace in place of a fake, Klinger tries to bribe Lieutenant Colonel Blake for a discharge (but withdraws the offer when he learns he could get twenty years in prison), and Trapper John "borrows" Hawkeye's watch to bet in a poker game.

Paymaster Hawkeye receives $3000 compensation for lost civilian pay, which he donates to Father Mulcahy, but bureaucrat Captain Sloan arrives from headquarters, demanding the money back. After Trapper wins the poker game, Hawkeye promptly takes back his watch and Trapper's winnings, paying off his debt to the Army, with an $8 surplus for Hawkeye (charging four dollars an hour for the rent of his watch).

Payday (1944 film)

Payday is an animated short film, directed by Friz Freleng and first released in September, 1944. It is part of the Private Snafu series. As in all the Snafu films, the voice of Private Snafu is performed by Mel Blanc.

Plot

The short opens somewhere in the Middle East. Snafu spends his payday by walking through a local bazaar. Technical Fairy 1st Class operates his own stand, allowing Snafu to invest in his future. He presents a poster with an ideal future for Snafu: a suburban house, a streamlined car, a gorgeous wife, a baby in a stroller, and a doghouse on a well-manicured lawn. Snafu is ready to hand over his money. But a devil appear and lures him into a souvenir shop. As Snafu spends his money, the image on the poster changes. The streamlined car is replaced progressively to a Ford Model T, to a horse and carriage, to a bicycle, and finally into a pair of roller skates.

The setting changes into the Caribbean. Snafu wears a pith helmet and fondles a wad of cash. Its another payday. Technical Fairy appears to him with a bank-book. Within it written: "no dollars, no sense". Snafu is once again led astray, into a local bar. The smoke from the bar turns into a cocktail shaker. The image from the poster changes again.
