Paul Weston

Paul Weston (March 12, 1912 – September 20, 1996) was an American pianist, arranger, composer, and conductor, who worked in music and television from the 1930s to the 1970s, pioneering Mood Music and becoming known as "the Father of Mood Music". His compositions include popular music songs such as "I Should Care", "Day by Day" and "Shrimp Boats". He also wrote classical pieces, including "Crescent City Suite" and religious music, authoring several hymns and masses.

Born Paul Wetstein in Springfield, Massachusetts, Weston had a keen interest in music from an early age and learned to play the piano. He was educated at Springfield High School, before attending Dartmouth College and Columbia University. At Dartmouth he formed his own band, as well as touring with the college band. He later joined Columbia's dance band, The Blue Lions, but was temporarily left unable to perform following a rail accident, and did some arrangement work while he recovered. Weston sold his first musical arrangements to Joe Haymes in 1934. After Haymes requested more material, Weston's music was heard by Rudy Vallee, who offered him work on his radio show. Weston also met Tommy Dorsey through Haymes, and in 1936 became a member of Dorsey's orchestra. Weston persuaded Dorsey to hire The Pied Pipers after hearing them in 1938, and the group toured with the bandleader.

Paul Weston (In Treatment)

Dr. Paul Weston is a fictional character on the five-nights-a-week HBO series, In Treatment. The character is portrayed by Gabriel Byrne, who was coined as TV's "latest Dr. McDreamy" by the New York Times for the role. According to Byrne, the character of Weston has flaws, but possesses certain virtues:

”I tend to think of him as an innately compassionate man, but a damaged man. But just because you’re damaged doesn’t mean you can’t be compassionate...I think what makes him a good therapist with all his patients, and sets him on the right road, whether he says the right thing or the wrong thing—he truly listens. He may not have the answer, but he’s paid the person the compliment of listening to them.”

Background

Growing up, Paul did not have a happy childhood. His father, who was a cardiac surgeon, left the family for a patient 26 years his junior when Paul was young. He was then left to take care of his depressed mother, playing the parental role in the broken family. Whilst at high school, Paul often got into trouble with the authorities, and when asked by counsellors about his aspirations for the future, he replied that he wanted to be anything but his father. Paul and his stepmother were often mistaken as either siblings or a pair of newlyweds whenever he joined his father's new family on special occasions as a young man. His decision to marry Kate in his late 20s was due to his admiration for her strength, something he did not see in his own mother in the aftermath of his parents' separation.

Paul Weston (politician)

Paul Martin Laurence Weston (born 1965) is a British politician, chairman of Liberty GB and parliamentary candidate. An activist and blogger, Weston joined the UK Independence Party (UKIP) in 2010 and stood as a Parliamentary candidate for Cities of London and Westminster. In 2011, Weston left UKIP and joined the now-defunct British Freedom Party with members of the English Defence League and former members of the British National Party (BNP). For Liberty GB, he was a candidate for South East England in the 2014 European election and for Luton South in the 2015 general election. He came last, with 158 votes (0.4%).

He is married to an immigrant from Romania. He was the President of the English branch of the International Free Press Society founded in 2009.

Political thought and activities

Weston has articulated a variation on the Frankfurt School conspiracy theory that the neo-Marxist intellectuals Theodor Adorno, Max Horkheimer and Herbert Marcuse, along with the Hungarian Communist György Lukács, had devised the tactics of "cultural terrorism" with "political correctness". He claims that this has led to deindustrialisation, mass-immigration, the weakening of the nation-state, as well as for the decline of the nuclear family, traditional morality, religion and education. The mass-murderer Anders Behring Breivik cited Weston's articles on the "Gates of Vienna" blog, claiming that there is a "civil war" brewing in Europe with Islam. When questioned on 25 April 2012, Weston admitted that the articles may well have inspired Breivik before adding "we cannot say nothing simply because there might be some lone psychopath somewhere in Europe."

Paul Weston (footballer)

Paul L. Weston (born 9 April 1957) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) as well as Glenelg, West Torrens and Norwood in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) during the 1970s and 1980s.

Early career

Weston started his career at Glenelg whilst still studying at Glengowrie High School. He quickly established himself as a key player, winning the club best and fairest in 1976 and taking the captaincy in 1979 at only 21 years of age. However, premiership success was elusive; during his time with the Tigers, Weston was a member of five losing grand finals - in 1974, 1975, 1977, 1981 and 1982. Frustrated by the lack of premiership success in his home state, Weston decided to try his luck in Victoria. Essendon won the race to recruit Weston and he relocated to Melbourne in January 1983 to begin training with the club. However, there was a disagreement with the transfer fee; Glenelg had asked for AUD 175,000, but Essendon's offer was around AUD 90,000. The case was taken to the National Football League Appeals Board, which in March 1983 set an undisclosed compromise fee that both Essendon and Glenelg were expected to agree on. Weston said afterward: "I am very relieved and happy ... I can now get on with the business of playing football instead of worrying about court cases."
