Paul (bishop of Mérida)

Paul was the metropolitan bishop of Mérida in the mid sixth century (fl. 540s/550s). He was a Greek physician who had travelled to Mérida, where there may have been a Greek expatriate community. Certainly enough Greek clergy were travelling to Spain in the early sixth century that Pope Hormisdas wrote to the Spanish bishops in 518 explaining what to do if Greeks still adhering to the Acacian heresy desired to enter communion with the local church.

At some point in his episcopate, he performed a Caesarian section to save a woman's life. In gratitude, her husband, the richest senator in Lusitania, left all his possessions as a legacy to Paul, as well as immediately giving him one half. Though canon law dictated that all gifts to bishops passed to the Church, Paul kept the legacy as his private possession.

Paul's sister's son, Fidelis, was hired out as a boy to a trading vessel on its way to Spain. When the merchants arrived in Mérida, they approached the bishop for an audience, as was customary, and Paul discovered his nephew. Paul immediately took Fidelis under his wing. Contrary to canon law, he consecrated Fidelis as his successor in the bishopric and tried to force the clergy to accept his decision by threatening to withhold his vast private wealth which technically belonged to the Church. Paul offered to leave the wealth to Fidelis and after Fidelis' death to the Church, but the bishops initially refused. They were forced to relent when he threatened to remove all his wealth and dispose of otherwise; the riches made Mérida by far the richest see in Spain. Fidelis, in accordance with Paul's wishes, left the wealth to the Church at his death. Paul's later biographer, the author of the Vitas Patrum Emeritensium justified the bishop's transgressions of canon law by saying that the ideas had been relevante sibi Spiritu sancto: "revealed to him by the Holy Spirit." The VPE, as it is abbreviated, refers to Paul as a saint.

Debil

Debil ("Moronic") is the first full-length studio album by Die Ärzte, released in 1984, following the EPs Zu schön, um wahr zu sein! and Uns geht's prima.... The songs "Paul" and "Zu spät" were released as singles, without being successful initially. However, a live version of "Zu spät" was released as a single from the live album Nach uns die Sintflut in 1989 and became a moderate hit in Germany.

In 1987, the Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien (Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons) put the songs "Claudia hat 'nen Schäferhund" and "Schlaflied" on the List of Media Harmful to Young People, with the effect that they could not be sold to minors, nor publicly advertised or displayed. This ban was lifted in 2004, which led to the subsequent reissue of the album (see below).

Paul Clarke (character)

Paul Clarke is a fictional character from the Henderson's Boys Series by Robert Muchamore. His mother died before the Second World War and his father died whilst carrying valuable radio blueprints for the British Secret Service.

Background and early life

Paul Clarke's mother died from cancer shortly before the second world war, leaving him in the care of his father, a wireless salesman.

Physical appearance

Paul is described by his sister as 'weedy'. He doesn't enjoy sport and finds the physical training of CHERUB hard.

Personality

Paul enjoys his own company and spends all of his personal time reading and drawing. His area of the dormitory is adorned by copies of some of Picasso's paintings.

Academia

Paul is an introvert and enjoys being on his own. He spends a lot of his time drawing and reading and drew for a German officer in Eagle Day.

The Escape

In The Escape,Paul and his sister Rosie are being hunted by German Agents. They are being hunted because their father, who died in an air-raid, was working for The British Secret Service and had valuable radio blueprints that the English needed to operate their Radios. British spy, Charles Henderson reaches them first with the help of Marc Kilgour.

Dessau

Dessau is a city in Germany on the junction of the rivers Mulde and Elbe, in the Bundesland (Federal State) of Saxony-Anhalt. Since 1 July 2007, it is part of the new city of Dessau-Roßlau. Population of Dessau proper: 77,973 (June 2006).

Geography

Dessau is situated on a floodplain where the Mulde flows into the Elbe. This causes yearly floods. The worst flood took place in the year 2002, when the Waldersee district was nearly completely flooded. The south of Dessau touches a well-wooded area called Mosigkauer Heide. The highest elevation is a 110m high former rubbish dump called Scherbelberg in the southwest of Dessau. Dessau is surrounded by numerous parks and palaces that ranks Dessau as one of the greenest towns in Germany.

History

Dessau was first mentioned in 1213. It became an important centre in 1570, when the Principality of Anhalt was founded. Dessau became the capital of this state within the Holy Roman Empire. Anhalt was dissolved In 1603 it was split into four – later five – Anhalts, Dessau becoming the capital of the mini-state of Anhalt-Dessau until 1918. In 1863 two of the noble line died out, and became reunited.

Lucien (band)

Lucien (band) were a "Hellrock" band from Stockholm, Sweden with one member from Clevedon, UK.

History 2004–2006

Taking the name from a character in the Sandman novels by Neil Gaiman, the band was formed in 2004 after vocalist/guitarist Greg Hell (Greg C.Pearson) left the punk band Mr.zippy (on UK's Golf Records) and moved to Stockholm, Sweden. He met guitarist Vic Hemgren (formerly of such bands as Construcdead, Maze Of Torment, Sorg and Månegarm). Later to join the band was Drummer "S.S" and bassist Ekwe Nordin. The band quickly established a sound based in the veins of punk bands such as Black Flag and The Misfits but employing a lot of the current Scandinavian rock sounds of bands such as The Hellacopters and Gluecifer. Combined with an anti-commercial and anti-authoritative attitude based in underground punk and death metal and a dark edge which was inspired by the love of such bands as Danzig and The Doors.

The band released 2 demo CD recordings, "Unholy Lords Of Rock" and "Blood Red Diary" (also released on cassette for the sake of old school). A four-track EP "D.I.Y Eller Dö" (D.I.Y Or Die) was released on a number of small underground labels worldwide in such places as Finland, Sweden, Austria, Portugal, Spain, Australia, USA and more mostly on CDR and cassette.

Lucien (Mirbeau)

Lucien is one of the central fictional characters in the novel Dans le ciel (In the Sky ), by French writer Octave Mirbeau.

The tragedy of an artist

He is the friend of the embedded narrator, Georges, to whom he has bequeathed his house, situated on a fantastic mountain peak that rises vertiginously into the sky. Lucien is modeled on Vincent van Gogh, whose paintings The Irises and The Sunflowers} Mirbeau himself had purchased, and whose masterpiece The Starry Night is attributed to Lucien. However, while considering the Dutch artist to be entirely sane, Mirbeau portrays Lucien as becoming gradually unhinged. Still, Lucien is meant to be taken as an entirely imaginary character, in no way a faithful rendering of his real-life counterpart.

Like Clara in Le Jardin des supplices (The Torture Garden) and Célestine in Le Journal d’une femme de chambre (The Diary of a Chambermaid), Lucien is given no last name. The son of a butcher, Lucien had had the good fortune to emerge « sound in mind and body from the stupefying regimen of secondary school », and thereafter, against the wishes of his father, had elected to become a painter – in the same way that l'Abbé Jules, from the novel of the same name, had chosen to become a priest, « By God! » Lucien’s artistic credo can be reduced to the formula he never tires of repeating: « See, feel, understand. »
