Paul Fox (11 April 1951 – 21 October 2007) was a British singer and guitarist, best known from his work with the UK punk band, The Ruts. The Ruts' style combined punk with dub reggae, a sound that owed much to Fox's guitar skills and earned him respect and admiration. The Guardian noted in his obituary: 'Fox played a pivotal songwriting role, and quickly became a model punk guitarist at a time when the three-chord thrash was the height of many of his contemporaries' ambitions.'

Fox was a founder member of the Ruts. When the original lead singer Malcolm Owen died of a heroin overdose the band continued with Fox on vocals, renaming themselves Ruts DC. After the break-up of the band in the early 1980s, Fox joined a London rock band called Dirty Strangers, who recorded two albums, that The Rolling Stones guitarists, Keith Richards and Ron Wood, both guested on. He went on to form Choir Militia, in 1983. This band soon folded after which he worked with Screaming Lobsters in 1987 and Fluffy Kittens from 1991 to 1994, retaining hard-core fan interest. In 1996 Fox played on a track for Mat Sargent's charity album Sex Drugs and HIV, the song, Heroin, also featured; Pauline Black - The Selector on vocals, Tony Barber - The Buzzcocks on bass, Dave Parsons - Sham 69 on 2nd guitar and Pete Davis - UK Subs on drums. From this point on his musical career was combined with carpentry, but he cut singles with the Chelsea Punk Rock Allstars in 1997, and ska legend Laurel Aitken in 2000.

Paul Fox (actor)

Paul Fox (born 20 March 1979) is an English actor, known for portraying Mark Redman in Coronation Street and Dr Jeff Goodwin in The Royal.

Background

Born in Truro, Cornwall, Fox moved to Birkenhead whilst still a baby. He has one older brother, Christian. He attended the Glenda Jackson Youth Theatre in Birkenhead, and studied for a BTEC in Performing Arts and an A Level in Theatre Studies at West Cheshire College.

Career

Fox made his television debut playing the nephew of Christopher Eccleston's character in the Channel 4 drama Hearts and Minds. He won the role after a casting director visited the Glenda Jackson Youth Theatre, looking for people to play a group of schoolchildren in the drama. Fox later won a role in the ITV children's drama Children's Ward, and went on to play Will Cairns in Emmerdale.

Fox played Mark Redman, the long-lost son of Mike Baldwin, in Coronation Street from 1999 to 2000. Fox left the programme when Mark, who had started an affair with Mike's fiancé Linda Sykes, confessed to it on Mike and Linda's wedding day, and was thrown out by Mike. Fox reprised the role in 2001 and also in 2006, around the time of Mike's death from Alzheimer's.
