Apple Newton

The Newton was a series of personal digital assistants developed and marketed by Apple Inc. An early device in the PDA category – the Newton originated the term "personal digital assistant" – it was the first to feature handwriting recognition. Apple started developing the platform in 1987 and shipped the first devices 1993; production officially ended on February 27, 1998. Newton devices run on a proprietary operating system, Newton OS; examples include Apple's MessagePad series and the eMate 300, and other companies also released devices running on Newton OS. Most Newton devices were based on the ARM 610 RISC processor and all featured handwriting-based input.

The Newton was considered technologically innovative at its debut, but its high price and early problems with its handwriting recognition feature limited its sales. Apple cancelled the platform at the direction of Steve Jobs in 1998.

Development

The Newton project was a personal digital assistant platform. The PDA category did not exist for most of Newton's genesis, and the phrase "personal digital assistant" was coined relatively late in the development cycle by Apple's CEO John Sculley, the driving force behind the project. Larry Tesler determined that a powerful, low-power processor was needed for sophisticated graphics manipulation. He found Hermann Hauser, with the Acorn RISC Machine (ARM) processor, and put together Advanced RISC Machines (now ARM Holdings). Newton was intended to be a complete reinvention of personal computing. For most of its design lifecycle Newton had a large-format screen, more internal memory, and an object-oriented graphics kernel. One of the original motivating use cases for the design was known as the "Architect Scenario", in which Newton's designers imagined a residential architect working quickly with a client to sketch, clean up, and interactively modify a simple two-dimensional home plan.

Newton, Edmonton

Newton is a residential neighbourhood located in north east Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is named for Reverend William Newton who arrived in Edmonton in 1875.

The neighbourhood is bounded on the south by Alberta (118) Avenue, on the north by the Yellowhead Trail, on the east by 50 Street, and on the west by 58 Street.

Rexall Place and the Coliseum LRT Station are located a short distance to the west of the neighbourhood. Rexall Place is home to both the Edmonton Oilers and the Edmonton Oil Kings hockey teams.

In the City of Edmonton's 2012 municipal census, Newton had a population of 7003291000000000000♠2,910 living in 7003130500000000000♠1,305 dwellings, a -2.5% change from its 2009 population of 7003298500000000000♠2,985. With a land area of 1.06 km² (0.41 sq mi), it had a population density of 7003274530000000000♠2,745.3 people/km² in 2012.

Residential development

Development of Newton, according to the 2001 federal census, began prior to the end of World War II when roughly one in twelve (8.8%) of residences were built. Just under half of the residences (45.8%) were built during the first fifteen years following the end of the war, that is, between 1946 and 1960. One in six residences (15.4%) were constructed during the 1970s and another one in six (18.0%) were constructed during the 1980s. The remaining residences were all constructed after 1990.

Patricia (Perez Prado song)

"Patricia" is a popular song with music by Pérez Prado and lyrics by Bob Marcus, published in 1958. The song is best known in an instrumental version by Prado's orchestra that became the last record to ascend to #1 on the Billboard Jockeys and Top 100 charts, both of which gave way the next week to the then newly introduced Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was also number one on the R&B Best Sellers for two weeks. It became a gold record. Billboard ranked it as the No. 5 song for 1958.

Prado re-charted and re-recorded the song in a 1962 "twist" version.

The tune in Perry Como's "Patricia" in 1950 bears no resemblance to any version of Prado's.
