New Birth

New Birth may refer to:

  • New Birth (band), an American musical group
  • Born again (Christianity), or "new birth", a spiritual rebirth in some forms of Christianity
  • Regeneration (theology), a Christian theological concept
  • Dvija, a Hindu theological concept
  • New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, a megachurch in the American state of Georgia
  • The New Birth (album)

The New Birth is the debut album by the Louisville, Kentucky group New Birth. It was released in 1970 on RCA Records and produced by mentor Harvey Fuqua, whose style of building a whole song around a simple phrase is represented by "The Unh Song", and his uncredited assistant Vernon Bullock.

The New Birth was as much a concept as it was a group, as it consisted of the instrumental group The Nite-Liters, (already famous for the song "K-Jee"), who during their height, consisted of James Baker, Robin Russell, Leroy Taylor, Charlie Hearndon, Tony Churchill, Austin Lander, Robert "Lurch" Jackson, (and, at this point, Johnny Graham, though they would later add Carl McDaniel), female vocalists, The Mint Juleps (which featured Londee Loren (Wiggins), Tanita Gaines, Janice Carter and Pam Swent), male vocalists, The New Sounds (Bobby Downs, Ronald Coleman, Gary Martin Young and a gentleman known as "Slim") plus additional vocalist Allen Frey, who also doubled on percussion.

    Born again (Christianity)

In some Christian movements (especially Fundamentalism and Evangelicalism), to be born again is to undergo a "spiritual rebirth", or a regeneration of the human spirit from the Holy Spirit. This is contrasted with the physical birth everyone experiences. The term "born again" is derived from an event in the New Testament in which the words of Jesus are misunderstood by his conversation partner, Nicodemus: "Jesus answered him, 'Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.' Nicodemus said to him, 'How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?'" The Greek phrase in the text is in itself ambiguous, resulting in a wordplay in which Jesus' meaning, "born from above," is misunderstood by Nicodemus as "born again." In contemporary Christian usage, the term is distinct from sometimes similar terms used in mainstream Christianity to refer to being or becoming Christian, which is linked to baptism. Individuals who profess to be "born again" often state that they have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The phrase "born again" is also used as an adjective to describe individual members of the movement who espouse this belief, as well as the movement itself ("born-again Christian" and the "born-again movement").

    New Birth (band)

New Birth (also known as The New Birth) is an American funk and R&B group. It was originally conceived in Detroit, Michigan by former Motown songwriter/producer, Vernon Bullock and co-founded in Louisville, Kentucky by him with former singer and Motown songwriter/producer Harvey Fuqua and musicians, Tony Churchill, James Baker, Austin Lander, Robert "Lurch" Jackson, Leroy Taylor, Charlie Hearndon, Bruce Marshall and Nathaniel "Nebs" Neblett.

    History

The history of the group began with the instrumental outfit, The Nite-Liters, which was originally formed in 1963 in Louisville, Kentucky by Tony Churchill and Harvey Fuqua. In its heyday, besides Churchill on tenor sax and vibes, the band featured Charlie Hearndon on guitar, James Baker on keyboards, Robin Russell on drums, Robert "Lurch" Jackson on trumpet, Austin Lander on baritone sax, Leroy Taylor on bass, and, later, Carl McDaniel on guitar. Earlier members included Johnny Graham, later of Earth, Wind & Fire and Jerry Bell also a member at one time.
