History
The Parkroyal brand was born when the first Parkroyal hotel was built on Royal Parade in Melbourne, Australia in 1962 and named after the Royal Park opposite it.
In 1989, Parkroyal Floating Hotel debuted in Ho Chi Minh City as the first international standard hotel in Vietnam. With 186 rooms, it was built by Bethlehem Shipyard in Singapore and anchored in Queensland, Australia in 1987. The hotel was later towed across the Great Barrier Reef to the Saigon River in Vietnam and operated there until 1997. Parkroyal Saigon returned to Vietnam in January 2008 and this time as the first atrium style hotel.
In 2002, Hotel Plaza Limited, a subsidiary of UOL Group Limited, purchased the rights to the Parkroyal brand name in Southeast and North Asia. Over the next three years, Hotel Plaza Limited renamed all its hotels in Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam to Parkroyal, to form a portfolio of seven properties in five cities.
