Papatoetoe
Papatoetoe is a suburb in the Auckland conurbation in northern New Zealand. One of the larger suburbs of the area commonly known as South Auckland, it is located to the northwest of central Manukau, and 18 kilometres southeast of Auckland city centre.
Papatoetoe is a Māori name, which can be loosely translated as 'undulating area where the toetoe is the predominant feature', making it named after the 'Prince of Wales' feather (or toetoe / toi toi), which grew abundantly in the swampy parts of the region. Due to some confusion over the spelling, the area was known as Papatoitoi for many years.
History
People have lived in the Papatoetoe area for almost the entire time of human settlement in New Zealand. For both the original Māori and the first English settlers, the Papatoetoe area was handily located close to the narrowest points between Auckland's two great harbours, where waka could be ported over land. It was also rich in fertile soil.
Inlets run from Papatoetoe eastward to the Waitemata Harbour and westward to the Manukau Harbour. Thus for travellers past and present the routes south to the Waikato River and the north to the Auckland isthmus - Tamaki-makau-rau (Tamaki coveted by many) - have always been through Papatoetoe.
Papatoetoe AFC
Papatoetoe AFC is a semi-professional football (soccer) club based in Papatoetoe, New Zealand. They compete in the Lotto Sport Italia NRFL Division 1.
Former club coaches include current All Whites coach Ricki Herbert.
History
Papatoetoe AFC was founded in 1959 through the efforts of Ken Hastings. the club entered the new Franklin & Districts competitions in 1960, competing from a site at the Papatoetoe Recreation Ground on Great South Road. In 1965 the club moved to its current home at Murdoch Park and the same year its senior team entered the Northern League. It gained promotion to the premier division in 1971, and it spent much of the next decade in either the lower reaches of the premier league or the upper part of the second flight.
Papatoetoe have reached the Quarter-finals of the Chatham Cup on three occasions, in 1984, 1985, and 1986, but have yet to progress beyond this stage of the competition.

Population centres
The 1977 electoral redistribution was the most overtly political since the Representation Commission had been established through an amendment to the Representation Act in 1886, initiated by Muldoon's National Government. As part of the 1976 census, a large number of people failed to fill out an electoral re-registration card, and census staff had not been given the authority to insist on the card being completed. This had little practical effect for people on the general roll, but it transferred Māori to the general roll if the card was not handed in. Together with a northward shift of New Zealand's population, this resulted in five new electorates having to be created in the upper part of the North Island. The electoral redistribution was very disruptive, and 22 electorates were abolished, while 27 electorates were newly created (including Papatoetoe) or re-established. These changes came into effect for the 1978 election. Papatoetoe was created from parts of the Mangere and Manukau electorates in the 1977 redistribution.
