Russell Watson (born 24 November 1966) is an English tenor who has released singles and albums of both operatic-style and pop songs. The self-styled "People's Tenor" had been singing since he was a child, and became known after performing at a working men's club. He came to attention in 1999 when he sang "God Save the Queen" at the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, "Barcelona" at the last match of the Premiership season between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford and a full set of songs at the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final in Barcelona between Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
Watson's debut album titled The Voice was released in May 2001; four others followed. However, an album planned for November 2006 was delayed due to the removal of a benign pituitary tumour. This album, titled That's Life, was eventually released on 5 March 2007.
"Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" is a psychedelic soul song, written by Motown songwriters Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong as a single for Motown act The Undisputed Truth in 1971. This version of "Papa" was released as a single in early 1972, and peaked at number 63 on the pop charts and number 24 on the R&B charts.
Later that year, Whitfield, who also produced the song, took "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" and remade it as a 12-minute record for The Temptations, which was a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and won three Grammy Awards in 1973. While the original Undisputed Truth version of the song has been largely forgotten, The Temptations' version of the song has been an enduring and influential soul classic. It was ranked #168 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, one of the group's three songs on the list. In retrospect, The Temptations' Otis Williams considers "Papa" to be the last real classic the group recorded (it would be the Temptations' last #1 hit and would win them their second and final Grammy in a competitive category).
How did I wake up each day,
Before that moment I saw your face
Where was I before your touch
Nowhere is where I was without you.
Without you in, my life was just a lie,
Before you I don't know how I got by.
Before I met you, before I held you in the night,
I don't know how I survived.
Before I found you, before you made everything right,
I was hurt for life.
Wasn't really living 'til you came into my life
I got through it baby,
But I don't know how I got by.
How did I get through those nights
Before that moment I held you tight.
Where was I before your kiss
How did I exist without you.
Life had no meaning, no reason and no rhyme,
Before you I don't know how I got by.
Before I met you, before I held you in the night
I don't know how I survived.
Before I found you, before you made everything right.
Wasn't really living 'til you came into my life,
I got through it baby,
But I don't know how I got by.
I thank God when I wake up,
I'm waking next to you.
I don't know what I was living for, before you,
before you whoooah!!!
Before I met you, before I held you in the night
I don't know how I survived.
Before I found you, before you made everything right,
I was hurt for life.
Wasn't really living 'til you came into my life
I got through it baby,
