Panic (company)

Panic is an Oregon-based software company that specializes in applications for Mac OS X and iOS. It was founded by Steven Frank and Cabel Sasser.

Their flagship program is Transmit, an FTP client, first released in 1998. The program currently competes with Fetch, Interarchy and Cyberduck, the other popular FTP clients for Mac OS X. Transmit has won a number of design awards, including Macworld Best of Show in 2005 and a 2005 Apple Design Award, for the Best Use of Mac OS X Tiger Technologies.

Audion, released in 1999, was a skinnable MP3 media player that competed with MacAMP and SoundJam MP, which were the only other Mac OS MP3 players at the time. Apple's iTunes was released in 2001, and in 2004 Panic retired Audion's development and began releasing it free of charge.

In 2004, Panic released their third major program, Unison, a Usenet reader. Unison also won an 2004 Apple Design Award, for Best Mac OS X User Experience, and was runner-up for Best Mac OS X Product of the year.

Panic

Panic is a sudden sensation of fear which is so strong as to dominate or prevent reason and logical thinking, replacing it with overwhelming feelings of anxiety and frantic agitation consistent with an animalistic fight-or-flight reaction. Panic may occur singularly in individuals or manifest suddenly in large groups as mass panic (closely related to herd behavior).

Etymology

The word derives from antiquity and is a tribute to the ancient God, Pan. One of the many gods in the mythology of ancient Greece: Pan was the god of shepherds and of woods and pastures. The Greeks believed that he often wandered peacefully through the woods, playing a pipe, but when accidentally awakened from his noontime nap he could give a great shout that would cause flocks to stampede. From this aspect of Pan's nature Greek authors derived the word panikon, “sudden fear,” the ultimate source of the English word: "panic".

Kernel panic

A kernel panic (sometimes abbreviated as KP) is an action taken by an operating system upon detecting an internal fatal error from which it cannot safely recover. The term is largely specific to Unix and Unix-like systems; for Microsoft Windows operating systems the equivalent term is "stop error" (or, colloquially, "Blue Screen of Death").

The kernel routines that handle panics, known as panic() in AT&T-derived and BSD Unix source code, are generally designed to output an error message to the console, dump an image of kernel memory to disk for post-mortem debugging and then either wait for the system to be manually rebooted, or initiate an automatic reboot. The information provided is of a highly technical nature and aims to assist a system administrator or software developer in diagnosing the problem. Kernel panics can also be caused by errors originating outside of kernel space. For example, many Unix OSes panic if the init process, which runs in userspace, terminates.

History

Panic (MxPx album)

Panic is the seventh full-length album by punk rock band MxPx It was released on June 6, 2005- internationally and a day later in the United States. This was a breakthrough album when the single "Heard That Sound" proved a minor radio hit. It also featured the Blink-182/+44 singer-bassist Mark Hoppus on "Wrecking Hotel Rooms." Two B-sides (an unreleased track called "Arrest Me" and a live/acoustic version of "Waiting for the World to End") were released on a SideOneDummy sampler in 2005.

Company (song)

"Company" is the title song from the Broadway musical, Company. It was written by Stephen Sondheim. The song is the show's introductory song. It is sung by the main character, Robert, and the full company in the first act, and reprised in a curtain call finale.

Motifs

One of Sondheim’s lesser-performed songs, "Company" relies heavily on rhythm and tempo with a simple melody, driven by a rock beat. The motif used throughout the entire score of Company debuts here, inspired by a telephone's “busy” signal. [The busy signal is used in recordings of the song]). The “Bobby, Bobby bubi, Robby, Robert darling” motif is a pulse of staccato and repetitive sound voiced by the show’s couples—first calling to Robert (the main character) by his legal name, and then by various nicknames and pet names—segueing into conversational exclamations and endearments. Then the entire chorus of “married friends” mutually invite Bobby to “come on over for dinner! We’ll be so glad to see you! Bobby come on over for dinner ... just be the three of us, only the three of us!”

14 Intelligence Company

14 Field Security and Intelligence Company (known as "The Det") was a part of the British Army Intelligence Corps which operated in Northern Ireland from the 1970s onwards. The unit conducted undercover surveillance operations against suspected members of Irish republican and loyalist paramilitary groups. Many allegations of collusion with loyalist paramilitaries were made against the unit.

Predecessors

The 14 Intelligence Company was the successor to the Special Reconnaissance Unit (SRU), which was itself a reconstituted Military Reaction Force (MRF). "Special Reconnaissance Unit" is the term appearing in official documents from the 1970s. An April 1974 briefing for Prime Minister Harold Wilson states:
