Palmyra, Pennsylvania

Palmyra is a borough in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Lebanon, Pennsylvania Metropolitan statistical area. The population was 7,096 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Palmyra is located at 40°18′29″N 76°35′38″W / 40.307960°N 76.593782°W / 40.307960; -76.593782 (40.307960, -76.593782).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.9 square miles (4.9 km²), all of it land.

Palmyra is located in the Lebanon Valley between Annville and Hershey. Situated on the western edge of Lebanon County, the borough is 10 mi (16 km) west of Lebanon, and 17 mi (27 km) east of Harrisburg. The village of Campbelltown is only 2 mi (3.2 km) south of Palmyra.

Although no water source runs directly through the borough, the Killinger, Quittapahilla, Spring, and Swatara Creeks are all nearby.

Geology

Geologist William E. Kochanov wrote an extensive report on the geology of the Palmyra area as part of the 1995 publication, Karst Geohazards. In his article, Kochanov discusses how the geology of the region contributes to the high number of sinkholes found in the area.

Palmyra is a city in and the county seat of Marion County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,600 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hannibal Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Palmyra was designated county seat in 1827. It was named after the ancient city of Palmyra, in Syria.

In 1862 the city was the scene of the Palmyra Massacre, in which ten Confederate prisoners were killed in retaliation for the disappearance of a local Union man.

Geography

Palmyra is located at 39°47′51″N 91°31′29″W / 39.79750°N 91.52472°W / 39.79750; -91.52472 (39.797396, -91.524857). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.76 square miles (7.15 km²), all of it land.

Transportation

On US 61-24, a divided highway, Palmyra is six miles from I-72 (US 36). St. Louis is about two hours away by car; Springfield, Illinois is a little less. Daily Amtrak trains link Quincy to downtown Chicago. Commuter air service connects Quincy to St. Louis.

Director's Cut

In 2005, to celebrate Pere Ubu's 30th Anniversary, a "Director's Cut" was released which featured new mastering, alternate mixes, and two bonus tracks. David Thomas explains: "The point of doing a Director's Cut is to benefit from that older and wiser thing. I reviewed all alternate mixes from the session, sometimes discovering that an earlier mix turned out to be superior to the chosen mix. As well, 10 years later, we have access to improved mastering technology. Consequently, there is a greater clarity and cohesion to the Director's Cut. We are not going to make both versions available. The Director's Cut is the way it's supposed to be. Period."
