Palm Beach Hotel (Palm Beach, Florida)

The Palm Beach Hotel, built in 1925 to replace an earlier building of the same name, is an historic four-story hotel located at 235-251 Sunrise Avenue in Palm Beach, Florida. Designed by architect Mortimer Dickerson Metcalfe in the Mediterranean Revival style, it was built by Thomas R. Clarke. In 1969 it became vacant and, except for several attempts to reopen it as a retirement hotel, it remained so until 1981 when it was converted into a condominium, the Palm Beach Hotel Condominium.

On April 21, 2010, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as No. 10000212.

Part of the fourth floor is now occupied by an Orthodox synagogue, the New Synagogue of Palm Beach.

The Beach Hotel can refer to:

Beach Hotel (Galveston)

The Beach Hotel was a seasonal resort in Galveston, Texas. Designed by architect Nicholas J. Clayton, it was built in 1882 at a price of US$260,000 (US$6.38 million in today's terms) to cater to vacationers. Owned by William H. Sinclair, the hotel opened on July 4, 1883 and was destroyed by a mysterious fire in 1898.

The front lawn of the beach hotel "provided a site for summer entertainment-fireworks, high-wire walkers, and bands."

Specifications

The 4 ¹⁄₂-story hotel was built atop 300 cedar piles driven into the sand. The roof had an octagonal dome, which housed the water tanks, and was painted in large red and white stripes, and the eaves were trimmed in a golden green.

Sewage

In 1898, the Beach Hotel was discovered to have been flushing its cesspools via pipe into the Gulf of Mexico. The city health official regarded this practice as "absolutely disgusting and disgraceful" and refused to allow the hotel to open until it connected to the city's sewage system. In the interim before the hotel connected, it mysteriously burned down.

Beach Hotel (Sydney)

The Beach Hotel is an historic de-licensed pub in the suburb of Rozelle, above White Bay in the Inner West of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is currently a private residence after having been in a long state of abandonment.

History

Built in 1881 on the corner of Smith and Mansfield Streets with an outlook over Glebe Island and Sydney city, the hotel was first known as the Why Not. In 1887 it became the Beach Hotel, perhaps because of the beach then existent in front of it in White Bay, but also plausibly in honour of Australian sculling champion Bill Beach, who became world champion in 1886, and returned in triumph from London the following year. The favourite haunt of sawmill workers, along with the neighbouring Bald Rock Hotel, it went into decline before finally closing in 1928.

Palm Beach (film)

Palm Beach is a 1980 Australian drama film directed by Albie Thoms. The stories involving surfing and drugs are followed in Sydney during 2 days. Thoms was nominated for an AFI award for Best Original Screenplay for the film.

Thoms had made a large number of experimental films but his was his first traditional feature.
