"Palestinian territories" and "occupied Palestinian territories" (OPT or oPt) are descriptions often used to describe the West Bank (including East Jerusalem) and the Gaza Strip which are occupied or otherwise under the control of Israel.Israeli governments have maintained that the area involved is within territorial dispute. The extent of the territories, while subject to future negotiations, have frequently been defined by the Green Line. The term "Palestinian Territory, Occupied" had been utilized by the UN and other international organizations between 1998 to 2013 in order to refer to the Palestinian National Authority; it was replaced in UN Secretariat communications by the term State of Palestine starting in 2012, and the ISO adopted the name change in 2013. However, as of August 2015, the UN Security Council continues to treat Palestine as a non-sovereign entity, which also prevents its admission to UN General Assembly membership.

Israel occupied the territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the Six-Day War of 1967, which had been earlier occupied by Jordan and Egypt respectively, and has maintained control of them since.

Israeli–Palestinian conflict

The Israeli–Palestinian conflict (Arabic: النزاع الفلسطيني - الإسرائيلي‎ al-Niza'a al'Filastini al 'Israili; Hebrew: הסכסוך הישראלי-פלסטיני‎ Ha'Sikhsukh Ha'Yisraeli-Falestini) is the ongoing struggle between Israelis and Palestinians that began in the mid-20th century. The conflict is wide-ranging, and the term is sometimes also used in reference to the earlier sectarian conflict in Mandatory Palestine, between the Jewish yishuv and the Arab population under British rule. The Israeli–Palestinian conflict has formed the core part of the wider Arab–Israeli conflict. It has been referred to as the world's "most intractable conflict".

Despite a long-term peace process and the general reconciliation of Israel with Egypt and Jordan, Israelis and Palestinians have failed to reach a final peace agreement. The remaining key issues are: mutual recognition, borders, security, water rights, control of Jerusalem, Israeli settlements,Palestinian freedom of movement, and Palestinian right of return. The violence of the conflict, in a region rich in sites of historic, cultural and religious interest worldwide, has been the object of numerous international conferences dealing with historic rights, security issues and human rights, and has been a factor hampering tourism in and general access to areas that are hotly contested.

Israeli–Palestinian conflict (2015–present)

An increase of violence occurred in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict starting early September 2015, known as the "Wave of Terror" or "Intifada of the Individuals" by Israelis or the "Knife Intifada" by international media, related in part to tensions between Palestinians and Israelis regarding the status of the Temple Mount. A major escalation occurred at 1 October 2015 with the killing of Eitam and Na'ama Henkin by Hamas militants near Beit Furik on 1 October was followed by a wave of "lone wolf" attacks and widespread protests by Palestinians, sparking fears of a Third Intifada.

Twenty-eight people have been killed in attacks including stabbings, car rammings and shootings between 13 September, 2015 and 5 January, 2016 - 25 Israelis, one Eritrean, one US citizen and one Palestinian. As of 14 December, 19 of those deaths occurred in the West Bank, while 4 occurred within Israel. The Palestinian health ministry says 149 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli security forces or civilians in that time, with over 15,000 injured in clashes with Israeli soldiers.

Palestine (2011 book)

Palestine from the Perspective of Ayatollah Khamenei (Persian: فلسطین از منظر آیت الله خامنه ای‎‎) is a 2011 book excerpting many of the statements of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on the Palestine issue. The book is edited by Saeed Solh-Mirzai and consists of 8 chapters and 416 pages. It is currently available in Iran only, while an Arabic translation is promised. According to the New York Post, the book opposes the Jewish state, and Khamenei emphasizes making life unbearable for Israeli Jews rather than starting formal wars or massacring them. Khamenei claims that his strategy for the "liberation of Palestine" is based on "well-established Islamic principles".

Palestinian National Authority

The Palestinian National Authority (PA or PNA; Arabic: السلطة الوطنية الفلسطينية‎ as-Sulṭa al-Waṭanīya al-Filasṭīnīya) is the interim self-government body established to govern the Gaza Strip and Areas A and B of the West Bank, as a consequence of the 1993 Oslo Accords. Following elections in 2006 and the subsequent Gaza conflict between the Fatah and Hamas parties, its authority had extended only in areas A and B of the West Bank. Since January 2013, the Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority uses the name "State of Palestine" on official documents.

The Palestinian Authority was formed in 1994, pursuant to the Oslo Accords between the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the government of Israel, as a five-year interim body. Further negotiations were then meant to take place between the two parties regarding its final status. According to the Oslo Accords, the Palestinian Authority was designated to have exclusive control over both security-related and civilian issues in Palestinian urban areas (referred to as "Area A") and only civilian control over Palestinian rural areas ("Area B"). The remainder of the territories, including Israeli settlements, the Jordan Valley region and bypass roads between Palestinian communities, were to remain under Israeli control ("Area C"). East Jerusalem was excluded from the Accords. Negotiations with several Israeli governments had resulted in the Authority gaining further control of some areas, but control was then lost in some areas when the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) retook several strategic positions during the Second ("Al-Aqsa") Intifada. In 2005, after the Second Intifada, Israel withdrew unilaterally from its settlements in the Gaza Strip, thereby expanding Palestinian Authority control to the entire strip.
