Ravi Shankar (IPA: [ˈrɔbi ˈʃɔŋkɔr]; 7 April 1920 – 11 December 2012), born Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury, his name often preceded by the title Pandit, was an Indian musician and composer who was one of the best-known exponents of the sitar in the second half of the 20th century as a composer of Hindustani classical music.
Shankar was born to a Bengali family in Benares, British India, and spent his youth touring India and Europe with the dance group of his brother Uday Shankar. He gave up dancing in 1938 to study sitar playing under court musician Allauddin Khan. After finishing his studies in 1944, Shankar worked as a composer, creating the music for the Apu Trilogy by Satyajit Ray, and was music director of All India Radio, New Delhi, from 1949 to 1956.
In 1956 he began to tour Europe and the Americas playing Indian classical music and increased its popularity there in the 1960s through teaching, performance, and his association with violinist Yehudi Menuhin and Beatles guitarist George Harrison. His influence on the latter helped popularize the use of Indian instruments in pop music throughout the 1960s. Shankar engaged Western music by writing compositions for sitar and orchestra, and toured the world in the 1970s and 1980s. From 1986 to 1992, he served as a nominated member of Rajya Sabha, the upper chamber of the Parliament of India. He continued to perform up until the end of his life. In 1999, Shankar was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.

Ravi Shankar (cartoonist)
Ravi Shankar Etteth, professionally known by his full name, or as Ravi Shankar is an Indian author and cartoonist.
He was born in Palakkad, Kerala and is a nephew of the cartoonist and author O. V. Vijayan.
His first cartoon appeared in Link. He worked for Indian Express on a contract basis, and as the staff cartoonist of India Today. He became the deputy editor of India Today. He was also art director of the magazine, as well as the satellite television station owned by the magazine.
In 1996, Etteth published his first book of short stories The Scream of the Dragonflies. By 2002, Etteth claimed he had retired from political cartooning for all practical purposes, and chose to describe himself as a writer and art director.
He is now a columnist and the Executive Editor of The New Indian Express, based in New Delhi.

P. Ravi Shankar
P. Ravi Shankar (born Pudipeddi Ravi Shankar Sarma) also known as Bommali Ravi Shankar or Sai Ravi is an Indian film actor, dubbing artist, director and writer. He primarily works in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada films. He dubbed for over 2600 films with more than 1000 films each in Telugu and Tamil languages. He dubbed for over 150 films each in Kannada and Malayalam films. He is the brother of popular Indian actor Sai Kumar. He won nine Andhra Pradesh state Nandi Awards for Best Male Dubbing Artist and one Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Male Dubbing Artist. He made his directorial debut with the Kannada film Durgi in 2002. He also worked as a dialogue writer and penned dialogues for over 75 Telugu films and 150 Tamil films. He also worked as a playback singer for films such as Rakta Charitra and Bejawada. He won his first Filmfare Award for his performance in the film Kempe Gowda.
Personal life
Ravi grew up as a child in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Ravi's father P.J. Sharma was also an actor and dubbing artist who worked in many Telugu, Kannada and Tamil films. His elder brother Sai Kumar entered in film industry as dubbing artist and became a very successful actor later. He is married to a Punjabi woman, Suchil Ravi Shankar and the couple has one son named Adhvey Shankar.
Ravi Shankar (spiritual leader)
Ravi Shankar, commonly known as Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, was born on 13 May 1956 in Tamil Nadu, India. He is also frequently referred to simply as "Sri Sri" (honorific) or as Guruji or Gurudev. He is a spiritual leader and founder of the Art of Living Foundation created in 1981, which aims to relieve individual stress, societal problems, and violence. In 1997, he established a Geneva-based charity, the International Association for Human Values, an NGO that engages in relief work and rural development and aims to foster shared global values. For his service, he has received some of the highest awards of several countries including India, Peru, Colombia, Paraguay, etc. In January 2016, he was awarded the "Padma Vibhushan" by the Government of India.
Life
Ravi Shankar was born in Papanasam, Tamil Nadu to Visalakshi Ratnam and R. S. Venkat Ratnam. He was named "Ravi" (a common Indian name meaning "sun") because his birth was on a Sunday, and "Shankar" after the eighth-century Hindu saint, Adi Shankara, because it was also Shankara's birthday. Ravi Shankar's first teacher was Sudhakar Chaturvedi, an Indian Vedic Scholar and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Bangalore University (St. Joseph's College). After graduation, Shankar travelled with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi giving talks and arranging conferences on Vedic science, and setting up meditation and Ayurveda centres.

Ravi Shankar (born 1975) is an Indian American poet, translator, convicted criminal and former literature professor at Central Connecticut State University and City University of Hong Kong. He is the founding editor and Executive Director of the international online journal of the arts, Drunken Boat, one of the world's oldest online journals of the arts (founded in 1999).
He has published and edited a total of ten books of poetry, including 'Deepening Groove' for which he won the 2010 National Poetry Review Prize and a collection of translations of Andal, the 8th century Tamil poet/saint, published by Zubaan Books in India in 2015 and distributed by University of Chicago Press in the US Market. He has won a Pushcart Prize, been nominated for a Poets' Prize and served as a judge for numerous poetry related competitions..
He has also appeared on NPR, the BBC, the Jim Lehrer News Hour and in the New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Chronicle of Higher Education and the Financial Times. He has been called "one of America's finest younger poets" by Connecticut poet laureate Dick Allen. He also co-edited W.W. Norton's "Language for a New Century: Contemporary Poetry from Asia, the Middle East & Beyond" called "a beautiful achievement for world literature" by Nobel laureate Nadine Gordimer. He is featured on the Poetry Foundation, and the Academy of American Poets website where you can find and read poems of his.
