P. D. Eastman

Philip Dey "Phil" Eastman (November 25, 1909 – January 7, 1986) was an American screenwriter, children's author, and illustrator. As an author, he is known primarily as P. D. Eastman.

Early life

Eastman was born in Amherst, Massachusetts to Clarence Willis and Ann Hull (Dey) Eastman. After studying at Phillips Academy, Andover and Williston Academy, he graduated from Amherst College in 1933 and later from the National Academy of Design in New York City.

Career

In film and animation

From 1936 to 1941, Eastman worked at Walt Disney Productions in assistant animation, story-sketch, and production design. From 1941 to 1942, he worked in the story department of Leon Schlesinger Productions, Warner Brothers's cartoon unit, and was a member of Local Number Eight Hundred And Thirty-Nine of Motion Picture Screen Cartoonists, the trade union to which cartoonists belonged in the United States.

In 1942, Eastman was inducted into the Army. He was assigned to the Signal Corps Film Unit which was headed by Theodor Geisel, who later became known as Dr. Seuss. Here, Eastman conducted picture planning for animated sequences in orientation and training films, and he also wrote scripts and drew storyboards for the Private Snafu series for Army-Navy Screen Magazine.

Cardiac asthma

Cardiac asthma is a medical diagnosis of wheezing, coughing or shortness of breath due to congestive heart failure. It is known as cardiac asthma because the symptoms mimic ordinary asthma. One study found that patients with cardiac asthma represented one third of congestive heart failure in elderly patients.

Depending on severity, it may be classified as a medical emergency as it can be a symptom of acute heart failure leading to the buildup of fluids in the lungs (pulmonary edema) as well as within and around the airways.

The distinction between true asthma and cardiac asthma is especially important because some treatments for true asthma, including inhalers, may actually worsen cardiac asthma and cause severe heart arrhythmias.

True asthma, in contrast, is caused by the inflammation and eventual narrowing down of airways. This is what causes the breathing difficulties that are characteristic to asthma. True asthma has nothing to do with fluid in the lungs or heart disease, or even the heart failure which is so associated with cardiac asthma.

Turdaș

Turdaș (Hungarian: Tordos) is a commune in Hunedoara County, Romania. It is composed of four villages: Pricaz (Perkász), Râpaș (Répás), Spini (Pád) and Turdaș.

This is the location of the Turdaş archaeological site. The archaeological site was a large Neolithic/Chalcolithic settlement along the course of the Mureş River. It was first researched by Zsófia Torma. The sub-culture Vinča-Turdaș (a late, regional variation of the Vinča culture) is named after this site. Some archaeological culture layers at this site are contemporary with the site at Tărtăria.

People v. Drew

People v. Drew, 22 Cal. 3d 333 (1978), was a case decided by the California Supreme Court that abandoned the M'Naghten Rules of the criminal insanity defense in favor of the formulation in the Model Penal Code. The decision was later abrogated by Proposition 8 in 1982, which restored the M'Naghten rules.

Corliss v. Wenner, 34 P.3d 1100 (Idaho 2001), was a case decided by the Court of Appeals of Idaho that rejected the common law distinctions between lost, mislaid, and abandoned property and treasure trove.

Decision

Four pounds of gold coins dating from 1857 to 1914 were found during the excavation of a driveway. The court awarded the property to the owner of the locus in quo instead of the finder and rejected the distinctions between categories of lost property as anachronistic in situations in which personal property is buried or hidden on privately owned realty. .
