High-rise (fashion)

A high-rise or high-waisted garment is one designed to sit high on, or above, the wearer's hips, usually at least 8 centimetres (3 inches) higher than the navel. In western cultures, high-rise jeans were especially common in the 1970s, in competition with low-rise pants.

Modern fashion

In western culture, high-waisted pants tend to have long zippers, ranging from about 7-10 inches long, and leave the navel either completely covered or barely shown. Zipper lengths are not to be confused with rises. High-waisted pants have rises typically 10 inches long or longer.

In European menswear, pants sat level with the navel until the 1950s, and were held up by a pair of suspenders. During the 1940s, Zoot suiters wore pants with a waistband so high that they often reached the chest.

1960s to 1990s

Low-waisted drainpipe jeans and flared trousers were a counterculture statement among the Mods and hippies of the late 1960s and early 1970s, in contrast to the higher waisted Levi Strauss jeans teenagers had worn previously. During the late 1970s, however, there was a backlash against disco and hippie fashions, and members of Generation X opted for higher rise pants. These straight leg acid wash jeans remained popular throughout the 1980s and 1990s, until hip hop fashion went mainstream and it became fashionable for teenagers to sag their baggy pants.

High-Rise (horse)

High-Rise (foaled 3 May 1995) is a retired Thoroughbred race horse and active sire, bred in Ireland, but trained in the United Kingdom, Dubai and the United States. He is best known as the winner of the Epsom Derby in 1998. He is currently at stud in Ireland.

Background

High-Rise is a bay horse bred in Ireland by his owner Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum a cousin of Sheikh Mohammed.

He was the best offspring of his sire, High Estate the Champion European two-year-old of 1988. His dam, High Tern was a minor winner, and a sister of High Hawk, a top-class stayer (Premio Roma) who produced the Breeders' Cup Turf winner In The Wings.

High-Rise was first sent into training with Luca Cumani at Newmarket, Suffolk.

Racing career

1997: two-year-old season

High-Rise made his racecourse debut at the very end of the 1997 British flat-racing season, when he was entered in an eighteen runner maiden race at Doncaster. He ran prominently, but after looking outpaced in the straight, he produced a strong late to lead close to the finish and win by a short head.

Bodhisattva

In Mahayana Buddhism, bodhisattva is the Sanskrit term for anyone who, motivated by great compassion, has generated bodhicitta, which is a spontaneous wish to attain buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. Bodhisattvas are a popular subject in Buddhist art.

Origins and outlines

In early Indian Buddhism, the term bodhisattva was primarily used to refer specifically to Gautama Buddha in his former life. The Jataka tales, which are the stories of the Buddha's lives, depict the various attempts of the bodhisattva to embrace qualities like self-sacrifice and morality.

From this Jataka tales, Bodhisattva originally meant the Buddhism practitioner of austerities that surpassed Śrāvakayana and Pratyekabuddhayana by far and completed Bodhisattvayana. Mount Potalaka, for example, is one of Bodhisattvayana. The name for practitioners who do not yet reach Bodhisattvayana was not fixed, but the terms Śrāvaka-Bodhisattva (聲聞菩薩) or Pratyekabuddha-Bodhisattva (縁覚菩薩) already appear in Āgama which is sutras of early Indian Buddhism.
