An oxymoron (usual plural oxymorons, less commonly the Latin-style oxymora) is a figure of speech that juxtaposes elements that appear to be contradictory. Oxymorons appear in a variety of contexts, including inadvertent errors (such as "ground pilot") and literary oxymorons crafted to reveal a paradox.
The most common form of oxymoron involves an adjective–noun combination of two words. For example, the following line from Tennyson's Idylls of the King contains two oxymorons:
Other examples of oxymorons of this kind include:
Less often seen are noun–verb combinations of two words, such as the line "The silence whistles" from Nathan Alterman's "Summer Night", or noun-noun combinations such as appears in the lyrics of Simon & Garfunkel's song "The Sound of Silence".
Oxymorons are not always a pair of words; they can also be devised in the meaning of sentences or phrases.
Oxymoron is the third studio album by American rapper Schoolboy Q. The album was released on February 25, 2014, by Top Dawg Entertainment and Interscope Records. Oxymoron was his first album released under a major record label to music retailers, whereas his previous albums were released independently to digital retailers only.
The album's recording took place from June 2012 through 2013. Schoolboy Q enlisted collaborators such as Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz, ASAP Rocky, Jay Rock, Tyler, The Creator and Kurupt, among others. The album's production was handled by high-profile record producers such as Boi-1da, The Alchemist, Mike Will Made It, Clams Casino, Nez and Rio, DJ Dahi and Pharrell, as well as others, including members of Top Dawg Entertainment's in-house production teams Digi+Phonics and THC.
Upon its release, Oxymoron received generally positive reviews from music critics, who praised its haunting production and Schoolboy Q's aggressive lyrics. Oxymoron was also a commercial success, debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200 selling 139,000 copies in its first week of release. It additionally peaked highly on the main album charts in Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
Oxymoron is a German punk rock band formed in 1992. The band was founded by Swen Sucker (vocals) and his cousin Björn (drums), along with two friends, Martin (guitar) and Filzlaus (bass).
Originating from Germany, their first real public performance was at an annual punk rock festival in their hometown, along with other local bands. After the show, they were offered several slots as support acts for more established bands all over the world.
In May 1994, they released their debut EP, Beware, Poisonous! on their own Oxyfactory Records label. The EP was soon reissued by Helen of Oi! Records in October of that year, which led to a full-length album deal. While recording Fuck The Nineties—Here’s Our Noize, bassist Filzlaus left the band, and was eventually replaced by a friend, Arne. Helen of Oi! Records originally released the album on vinyl in May 1995, and re-released it on CD in the United States in February 1996.
Following the release of Fuck The Nineties—Here’s Our Noize, which received great underground reviews, Oxymoron began to tour across Germany as well as in Europe. The band released a split EP with English band Braindance, entitled Mohican Melodies in September 1995. Oxymoron released the Crisis Identity EP in March 1996 on Arne’s short-lived Rough Beat Records label, and the band appeared on Helen Of Oi!’s Streetpunk Worldwide compilation EP in the same year. They also embarked on their first US tour, along the east coast with Braindance and The Casualties. Also in 1996, Oxymoron made the jump to the German Knock-Out Records label, which released the band's second full-length, The Pack Is Back, in April 1997. The release was followed by more touring in Europe, as well as a three-week summer tour in Japan with The Discocks. Oxymoron established themselves well in the American and German punk scene as an anti-racist streetpunk band.
Down in the town in the stinky clubs.
I'm pissed near a collapse, but I won't stop.
My hair is died, I'm a complete flop.
But I can't take it, man!
I was raised as a son who should get on.
But what has become of me, their son?
I'm Oi-possessed and like my way.
What has become of me?
[Chorus:]
I wanna be a dirty punk!
Studs & chains and leather braces.
You wanna be a dirty punk!
Do live fast and sod their phrases.
- Dirty Punk!
Now heading for the welfare.
Run down is what you say.
Just watch me when I run amok, and try to
hide from me.
I never really cared 'bout what they thought.
I won't give in 'til I peg out. 'cause I
won't end up like my dad, it's sheer conformity.
Down in the town in the stinky clubs.
I'm pissed near a collapse, but I won't stop.
My hair is died, I'm a complete flop.
But I can't take it, man!
Was raised as a son who should get on.
But I rather do it on my own.
I'm Oi-possessed and won't conform.
