Out of Darkness is a 1994 made-for-television film starring singer and actress Diana Ross. The movie was distributed and released by ABC on January 16, 1994 in the USA, Germany, Spain, France, Greece, Italy and Portugal.
The film was rated PG-13 and rated M in Australia. The movie was made by several different production companies; these included Ross's Anaid Film Productions Inc., Andrew Delson Company, Capital Cities/ABC Video Enterprises Inc. and Empty Chair Productions Inc.
In an attempt to improvise the "walk" of a homeless indigent, Ross discreetly placed an orange between her skirted thighs and proceeded to hobble along on cue. The effort required to keep the concealed orange in place, and without using her hands, resulted in a gait so uncanny that Ross's director, Larry Elikann, later quizzed her about how she walked the "walk." But according to Ross herself, as she related to the audience of Inside the Actors Studio on February 19, 2006, she never did disclose the simplicity of her little ruse.
Out of Darkness is the first studio album from In the Midst of Lions. Strike First Records released the album on May 26, 2009.
Awarding the album three and a half stars from Jesus Freak Hideout, Scott Fryberger states, "despite the album's brevity, the seven full songs definitely give the listener a good look into who they are, musically and lyrically." Chris W., giving the album four stars for Indie Vision Music, writes, "One of the best praise and worship based metal releases available. This debut is sure to bring scene wide recognition to In The Midst Of Lions not just for its music, but for its message as well."
Out of Darkness is a 2015 historical young-adult novel by Ashley Hope Pérez. The novel chronicles a love affair between a teenage Mexican American girl and a teenage African-American boy in 1930s New London, Texas, occurring right up to the 1937 New London School explosion.
Juan Castillo of NBC News wrote that Out of Darkness "stares unflinchingly at racism, classism, segregation and the people who live on the margins of society."
The book was released on September 1, 2015.
The novel begins with the school explosion and then recounts prior events, beginning in September 1936. 15-year old Naomi Vargas, a high school senior who originates from San Antonio, moves in with her oil field worker stepfather. She becomes friends and falls in love with Wash Fuller, an African-American boy. Naomi deals with overt racism in New London and her history with her father. After the explosion occurs, the townspeople blame Wash for the disaster.
The book includes various pages colored black and some black-and-white photographs. In the sections before the plot's climax the pages have increasing amounts of white space.
From my black tongue words of scorn
out of darkness my ways were born.
I can still fear their presence
the thoughts within my mind
frail dreams of wayward essence
a deal that's you unsigned
so mean, unclean and godless
the roots I'm scared to find
their needs are often heartless
like truth that's long declined.
Strange and vain are the feelings
as my mind can flow free
these unpleasant revealing
can they really be me?
My thoughts will pull me under
life spinning round and round
where will it stop I wonder?
No trace of solid ground like seconds into hours
my days are passing by
I'll climb an endless tower
