Out (baseball)
In baseball, an out (also informally "away" or "down" when mentioning the number of batters currently out) occurs when the defensive, or fielding, team effects any of a number of different events, and the umpire rules a batter or baserunner out. When a player is called out, he is said to be retired. When three outs are recorded in an inning during a team's turn at offense, that team's half of the inning finishes, and it is said that "the side is retired."
To signal an out, an umpire generally makes a fist with one hand, and then flexes that arm either upward (particularly on pop flies) or forward (particularly on routine plays at first base). Home plate umpires often use a "punch-out" motion to signal a called third strike.
The most common ways batters or runners are put out are by strikeouts, fly outs, tag outs, and force outs; however, there are many somewhat rarer ways an out can occur.
- with two strikes, he swings at a pitched ball and misses;
- with two strikes, he does not swing at a pitch that the umpire judges to be in the strike zone;
- with two strikes, he foul tips a pitch directly back into the catcher's mitt, and the catcher holds the ball and does not drop it;
- with two strikes, he bunts a pitch into foul territory;
- the third strike is pitched and caught in flight;
- on any third strike, if a baserunner is on first and there are fewer than two outs;
- he is hit by his own fair ball, outside of the batter's box, before the ball is played by a fielder;
- he commits interference;
- he fails to bat in his proper turn and is discovered in an appeal;
- he hits a pitch while one foot is entirely outside of the batter's box;
- he steps from one batter's box to the other when the pitcher is ready to pitch; or
- he is found to have used an altered bat.
OUTeverywhere
OUTeverywhere (also known simply as OUT and formerly OUTintheUK) is a website providing an online lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, chiefly in the UK, although it has members worldwide. The site provides member profiles with picture galleries, private messages, discussion boards (the use of which is restricted to paying customers) and online chat. The community also organises offline events, such as coffee or cocktail outings, sporting events and day trips.
History
The website was created in 1995 after which the membership then increased due to word of mouth in conjunction with a small amount of advertising and PR.
Initially the site was for gay men only. In 2003 OUTforWomen was launched. At first the two sites were run separately. Eventually the sites started to integrate. Initially integration was limited, but eventually a decision was made to allow full integration between the two sites.
In May 2005 the site was relaunched under the OUTeverywhere name. The relaunch involved a major redesign of the website, as well as full integration between male and female members. The relaunch also indicated a change of ethos moving the website from an online community to a real life organisation operating both online and offline. Part of this change in ethos was to be achieved by calling the site "Up and Doing". However, the relaunch eventually proceeded with the name "OUTeverywhere" after complaints from long-standing members though the company trades under the name "Up and Doing Ltd".
Out (1982 film)
Deadly Drifter (also known as Out) is a satirical 1982 film directed by Eli Hollander. The film is based on Ronald Sukenick's 1973 novel, OUT. It stars Peter Coyote, O-Lan Jones, and Danny Glover. The movie tells the tale of Rex (Coyote) roaming the U.S. doing various assignments for a mysterious group of "urban guerrillas" they call "Our Friends". In each meeting the person or persons designated "It" carries a hidden stick of dynamite. Director Eli Hollander summarizes the film, "A subtitle of it could be 'From Yippie to Yuppie. And the '80s are certainly the age of yuppies. The film does kind of chronicle the history of the transformation from the '60s into the '80s."
Synopsis
Deadly Drifter is about a team, known as "Our Friends", searching for the "Old Man", who is dying. Their trip across the U.S. takes many twists and turns along the way, as you see through the eyes of the main character, Rex/Harrold, who ultimately questions society. Whales are part of his ultimate revelation.
