Ottawa County, Michigan

Ottawa County is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the population was 263,801. The county seat is Grand Haven. The county is named for the Ottawa Nation. It was set off in 1831 and organized in 1837.

Ottawa County is included in the Grand Rapids-Wyoming, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,631 square miles (4,220 km²), of which 563 square miles (1,460 km²) is land and 1,068 square miles (2,770 km²) (65%) is water.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 263,801 people residing in the county. 90.1% were White, 2.6% Asian, 1.5% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 3.4% of some other race and 2.0% of two or more races. 8.6% were Hispanic or Latino (of any race). 31.0% were of Dutch, 14.2% German, 5.8% English and 5.7% Irish ancestry.

Ottawa is a city located at the confluence of the navigable Illinois River and Fox River in LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. The Illinois River is a conduit for river barges and connects Lake Michigan at Chicago, to the Mississippi River, and North America's 25,000 mile river system. The population estimate was 18,562 as of 2013. It is the county seat of LaSalle County and it is part of the Ottawa-Peru, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Ottawa was the site of the first of the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858. During the Ottawa debate Stephen A. Douglas, leader of the Democratic Party, openly accused Abraham Lincoln of forming a secret bipartisan group of Congressmen to bring about the abolition of slavery.

The John Hossack House was a "station" on the Underground Railroad, and Ottawa was a major stop because of its rail, road, and river transportation. Citizens in the city were active within the abolitionist movement. Ottawa was the site of a famous 1859 extrication of a runaway slave named Jim Gray from a courthouse by prominent civic leaders of the time. Three of the civic leaders, John Hossack, Dr. Joseph Stout and James Stout, later stood trial in Chicago for violating the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850.

Ottawa (City of)

Ottawa (City of) was a federal electoral district in the province of Ontario, Canada, that was represented in the Canadian House of Commons from 1867 to 1935.

It was created by the British North America Act of 1867. It consisted of the city of Ottawa. After 1872, there were two members elected in this electoral district.

In 1892, it was redefined to exclude the New Edinburgh district of the city. In 1903, it was redefined as the city of Ottawa, excluding Rideau Ward. In 1914, it was redefined to exclude Hintonburgh, Bayswater and Mechanicsville neighbourhoods as well as Rideau Ward. It continued to return two members.

In 1924, it was redefined as the city of Ottawa, excluding Rideau Ward and that part of the city lying west of a line beginning at the intersection of the Rideau Canal with the Canadian Pacific Railway in the south, and following the railway, Somerset Street, Bayswater Avenue, Bayview Road and Mason Street, to the Ottawa River.

The electoral district was abolished in 1933 when it was divided into Ottawa West and Ottawa East ridings.

Michigan ⁱ/ˈmɪʃᵻɡən/ is a state located in the Great Lakes and midwestern regions of the United States. The name Michigan is the French form of the Ojibwa word mishigamaa, meaning "large water" or "large lake". Michigan is the tenth most populous of the 50 United States, with the 11th most extensive total area (the largest state by total area east of the Mississippi River). Its capital is Lansing, and the largest city is Detroit.

Michigan is the only state to consist of two peninsulas. The Lower Peninsula, to which the name Michigan was originally applied, is often noted to be shaped like a mitten. The Upper Peninsula (often referred to as "the U.P.") is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac, a five-mile (8 km) channel that joins Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. The two peninsulas are connected by the Mackinac Bridge. The state has the longest freshwater coastline of any political subdivision in the world, being bounded by four of the five Great Lakes, plus Lake Saint Clair. As a result, it is one of the leading U.S. states for recreational boating. Michigan also has 64,980 inland lakes and ponds. A person in the state is never more than six miles (9.7 km) from a natural water source or more than 85 miles (137 km) from a Great Lakes shoreline.
