Organised crime

Organized crime is a category of transnational, national, or local groupings of highly centralized enterprises run by criminals who intend to engage in illegal activity, most commonly for money and profit. Some criminal organizations, such as terrorist groups, are politically motivated. Sometimes criminal organizations force people to do business with them, such as when a gang extorts money from shopkeepers for so-called "protection".Gangs may become disciplined enough to be considered organized. A criminal organization or gang can also be referred to as a mafia, mob, or crime syndicate; the network, subculture and community of criminals may be referred to as the underworld.

Other organizations—including states, militaries, police forces, and corporations—may sometimes use organized crime methods to conduct their business, but their powers derive from their status as formal social institutions. There is a tendency to distinguish organized crime from other forms of crimes, such as, white-collar crime, financial crimes, political crimes, war crime, state crimes, and treason. This distinction is not always apparent and the academic debate is ongoing. For example, in failed states that can no longer perform basic functions such as education, security, or governance, usually due to fractious violence or extreme poverty, organised crime, governance and war are often complementary to each other. The term Parliamentary Mafiocracy has been used to describe democratic countries whose political, social and economic institutions are under the control of a few families and business oligarchs.

Treat (band)

Treat is a melodic heavy metal band from Stockholm, Sweden. In the second half of the 1980s they had national as well as international successes with songs like "Get You on the Run", "World of Promises", "Party All Over" and the classic "Ready for the Taking"

They played at rock festivals like Monsters of Rock in 1988 in Germany. They were also the opening act for Queen in Sweden in 1986 and opened for W.A.S.P. during their first Swedish tour.

In 2005, they made a comeback and released the collection Weapons of choice 1984-2006 on March 19, which included the previously unreleased track "Still in Heaven" along with the two new songs "Go!" and "Burn for You". Their first reunion show was in front of 4000 people at the Sweden Rock Festival on June 10, 2006.

They were signed to the labels Mercury, Vertigo and now Universal.

The song "Roar" from the album Coup de Grace is the main theme of the Facebook app game "Monster Galaxy" and also played significantly on the GOM Star League Starcraft tournament.

National Crime Syndicate

The National Crime Syndicate was the name given by the press to a multi-ethnic American confederation of several crime organizations. Its origins are uncertain.

History

According to writers on organized crime, the Syndicate was an idea of Meyer Lansky and was founded or established at a May 1929 conference in Atlantic City, attended by leading underworld figures throughout the United States, including Lansky, Johnny Torrio, Lucky Luciano, Al Capone, Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel, Frank Costello, Joe Adonis, Dutch Schultz, Abner "Longy" Zwillman, Louis "Lepke" Buchalter, Vince Mangano, gambler Frank Erickson, Frank Scalice and Albert "Mad Hatter" Anastasia. Others described the Atlantic City meeting as a coordination and strategy conference for bootleggers.

According to the findings of the U.S. Senate Special Committee in the 1950s chaired by Estes Kefauver, it was a confederation of mainly Italian and Jewish organized crime groups throughout the United States.

The media dubbed the enforcement arm of the Syndicate "Murder, Inc.", a gang of Brooklyn mafiosi who carried out murders in the 1930s and 1940s for various crime bosses. It was headed by Buchalter and Anastasia, who reported to commission members Lepke and Adonis, and included many infamous mobsters. Murder Inc. consisted of two factions, The Jewish Brownsville Boys headed by Abe "Kid Twist" Reles, who reported to Lepke Buchalter and Jacob "Gurrah" Shapiro, and the Italian Ocean Hill Hooligans led by Harry "Happy" Maione, who reported to Albert Anastasia. Bugsy Siegel was involved in many of Murder Incorporated's murders, but as a leading figure instead of a soldier.

Crime Syndicate of America

The Crime Syndicate are teams of fictional supervillains from one of DC Comics' parallel universes, who are the evil counterparts of the Justice League of America. The original team was specifically known as Crime Syndicate of America and is sometimes abbreviated as CSA. This first superpowered Crime Syndicate team appeared in Justice League of America (vol. 1) #29 in August 1964. The primary successive incarnation, known as the Crime Syndicate of Amerika (with the variant spelling of America), first appeared in the 2000 JLA: Earth 2 graphic novel.

A related successive group on Earth-3 is known as the Crime Society of America and first appeared in 52 #52, and later featured in Countdown to Final Crisis. A "Golden Age" supervillain group, the Crime Society was to Earth-2 what the Anti-Matter Crime Syndicate of Amerika was to Earth-0, until it was removed from continuity following DC's 2011 "Flashpoint" storyline and The New 52 company-wide reboot. Following this, a singular Crime Syndicate is the Earth-3 counterpart of the Earth-0 Justice League, first appearing in Justice League #23 (October 2013), and the main focus of the company-wide crossover storyline "Forever Evil". The events of that story have far-reaching consequences in the DC Universe, and the Crime Syndicate characters which survive remain on Earth-0 in one form or another after its events.
