Open Road Films

Open Road Films (sometimes written as Open Road or ORF) is an American film production company based in Los Angeles, California. It was launched in March 2011 by the two largest U.S. theatrical exhibitors, AMC Theatres and Regal Entertainment Group.

Company history

AMC Entertainment and Regal Entertainment Group hired Tom Ortenberg, as CEO. He is a former executive of Lionsgate and The Weinstein Company. On April 13, 2011 Tom Ortenberg hired Jason Cassidy (president of marketing), Elliott Kleinberg (General Counsel and executive vice president of operations and business affairs), Steven Andriuzzo (chief financial officer), and Ben Cotner (senior vice president of acquisitions). The studio released its first film, Killer Elite, on September 23, 2011.Killer Elite was directed by Gary McKendry and starring Jason Statham, Clive Owen and Robert De Niro.

Open Road titles are distributed in the home entertainment market by Universal Studios Home Entertainment. On June 28, 2011 Open Road Films signed a pay-TV deal with Netflix, which expires in 2016. On October 1, 2013, the studio signed a new pay-TV deal with Showtime that begins in 2017 and expires in 2020. On February 10, 2014, Open Road extended its ancillaries deal with USHE.

"Open Road" is the first single from Bryan Adams' 2004 album Room Service.

The single reached number 21 in the UK Singles Chart and number 23 in Germany and number 1 in Canada. The music video was set in a traffic jam in a car.

In the summer of 2005, the song was used as the theme song in ESPN's SportsCenter series 50 States in 50 Days.

Open Road (2012 film)

Open Road is a 2012 American-Brazilian drama film directed by Marcio Garcia. The film follows the story of Angie, a young Brazilian artist who travels to the United States in a journey of self-discovery. Arriving in the United States, she rents a car and starts running through the streets, and meets Chuck, a street dweller.

Background

The movie is a co-production between Brazil and the U.S., Belle, whose mother is Brazilian and father is American, didn’t have any trouble preparing for her role of Angie. Her character also has parents from both countries, just like in her real life. Belle feels that is important for her to promote the Brazilian culture overseas.

History

The genre has its roots in spoken and written tales of epic journeys, such as the Odyssey and the Aeneid. The road film is a standard plot employed by screenwriters. It is a type of bildungsroman, a story in which the hero changes, grows or improves over the course of the story.

The on-the-road plot was used at the birth of American cinema but blossomed in the years after World War II, reflecting a boom in automobile production and the growth of youth culture. Even so, awareness of the "road picture" as a genre came only in the 1960s with Bonnie and Clyde and Easy Rider.
