One for All is a New York City-based hard bop sextet, featuring Eric Alexander (tenor saxophone), Jim Rotondi (trumpet), Steve Davis (trombone), David Hazeltine (piano), John Webber (bass) and Joe Farnsworth (drums). The style of the group has been likened to 1960s-era Blue Note jazz and has been described as being reminiscent of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Critic David Adler of JazzTimes has dubbed One for All "New York’s premier hard-bop supergroup," while Matt Collar at allmusic called the band "one of the foremost mainstream jazz ensembles to come out of the '90s."

    History

The group was officially formed in 1997 for an engagement at Smalls Jazz Club, and recorded its first album Too Soon Too Tell later that year for the Sharp Nine label. Alexander, Rotondi and Farnsworth had all been acquainted in New York City as far back as 1988, and later Farnsworth introduced Davis to the other musicians. Hazeltine and Peter Washington began performing with the former four players in 1996 at the jazz club Augie's, which would later be re-opened as Smoke, a venue at which the group would eventually record a live album. Washington would later be replaced by John Webber, and the band has since signed to the Criss Cross label. The name One for All is borrowed from the Jazz Messengers' last album.

One for All (Art Blakey album)

One for All is the final studio album by drummer Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers recorded in 1990 and released on the A&M label.

    Reception

Scott Yanow of Allmusic stated "The final recording by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers found the 70-year old drummer (just months before his death) doing what he loved best, leading a group of young players through hard-swinging and generally new music in the hard-bop style... A satisfying final effort from an irreplaceable drummer and bandleader".

    One For All

    by: Rebellion

    Built of metal
    Of gleaming steel
    Mighty and invincible
    And fear I never feel
    Screaming warcries
Like an iron bird of prey
    Hungry for the power
    Choosing our way
I was brought up by the wolves no way I'm turning back
There's a world against us ready for attack
I've been a fighter all my life no way I'm giving in
Call me a devil's child then I'll live in sin
And still we march and never fall
We're standing proud we're standing fall
    We're holding on
    One for all
And there are few I can recall
Who rise above the crowd so tall
    We're holding on
    One for all
    Angry and wild
    Hearts burning deep within
Never turn the back on you
You'll stab the knife right in
    Raging through the town
    Forever free
    Born to be a rebel
    Born to be your enemy
The harder that you come the harder I shall be
I'll never trust in you I am your enemy
There's no way to stop me I'm just like a stallion
This is what I live this is my own rebellion
And the world is never with us
So we must hold on alone
    But heroes never falter
And the lonely one is strong
And we got our friends to count on
Through the hard times and the rain
So we'll never play your rules
