Fifth Avenue is a major thoroughfare going through the borough of Manhattan in New York City, United States. It stretches from West 143rd Street in Harlem to Washington Square North at Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village. It is considered among the most expensive and best shopping streets in the world.

History

The lower stretch of Fifth Avenue extended the stylish neighborhood of Washington Square northwards. The high status of Fifth Avenue was confirmed in 1862, when Caroline Schermerhorn Astor settled on the southwest corner of 34th Street, and the beginning of the end of its reign as a residential street was symbolized by the erection, in 1893, of the Astoria Hotel on the site of her house, later linked to its neighbor as the Waldorf–Astoria Hotel (now the site of the Empire State Building). Fifth Avenue is the central scene in Edith Wharton's 1920 Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Age of Innocence. The novel describes New York's social elite in the 1870s and provides historical context to Fifth Avenue and New York's aristocratic families.

800 Fifth Avenue

800 Fifth Avenue is a 166 m (545 ft) skyscraper in Seattle, Washington. It was constructed from 1979 to 1981 and has 42 floors. It is the 9th tallest building in Seattle and was designed by 3D/International. The building has been able to retain a minimum of 98% occupancy since it was opened.

In April 2014, its name was changed to 800 Fifth Avenue. The building was previously known as Bank of America Fifth Avenue Plaza when its naming rights were held by the Bank of America. It was originally built for Seafirst Bank, which was acquired by the Bank of America prior to the tower's completion.

William K. Vanderbilt House

The William K. Vanderbilt House, also known as the Petit Chateau, was a Châteauesque mansion at 660 Fifth Avenue on the Upper East Side in New York City. It was next door to the Triple Palace of William Henry Vanderbilt, which occupied the entire block between 51st and 52nd streets on the west side of Fifth Avenue.

History

The mansion was built for William Kissam Vanderbilt, second son of William H. Vanderbilt and Maria Louisa Kissam from 1878 to 1882. Determined to make her mark in New York society, Vanderbilt's wife Alva worked with the architect, Richard Morris Hunt, to create the French Renaissance-style chateau. Her renowned fancy-dress ball, held here in March 1883 and attended by a thousand people, captured the public's attention. The structure, a reflection of Alva's love of all things French, was one of the earliest chateau style mansions in New York City and served as inspiration for many later designs throughout the country by Hunt and others.

It was sold to real-estate developer Benjamin Winter, Sr. in 1926, demolished, and replaced by a commercial building. In a draft of her memoirs, Alva, then Mrs. Belmont, merely noted the demolition in passing. The site is currently occupied by an office building known as 666 Fifth Avenue.

One Fifth Avenue

One Fifth Avenue is a 2008 novel by Candace Bushnell about the residents of the prestigious building. Its character include a middle aged screenwriter, a novelist with a bad marriage to and a hedge fund manager's wife.

"With a breezy pace that brings to mind a Gilded Age comedy of manners, the novel might not have anything new to say about New York society, but there are enough twists to keep it fun," wrote an anonymous critic in Kirkus Reviews. Reviewing the book in The New York Times, Henry Alford wrote, "There are pleasures to be found here," highlighted by "sexual tension and the striving for success." But he concluded, "What’s missing is the kind of stylistic flourish or flight of imagination that would make the proceedings memorable. Bushnell’s prose here is rarely ever more than workmanlike, and I’m hard-pressed to recall any passage that bears repeating."

Fifth Avenue (San Diego Trolley station)

Fifth Avenue is a station of the Blue, Orange, and Silver Lines on the San Diego Trolley. It is located in the Downtown Core of the city and is surrounded by a variety of important office buildings.

Upon the opening of the San Diego Trolley service in 1981, this station on C Street, between Sixth Avenue and Fifth Avenue, was originally named the Gaslamp North station or the Centre City station. In 1986, the station was permanently renamed the Fifth Avenue Station.

This station was closed on December 17, 2012, for renovations as part of the Trolley Renewal Project. It was reopened by June of 2013, and is now back to normal operations.

Fifth Avenue – 59th Street (BMT Broadway Line)

Fifth Avenue – 59th Street is a station on the BMT Broadway Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 60th Street in Manhattan, it is served by the N train at all times, the Q train on weekdays, and the R train at all times except late nights.

Station layout

The full-time side of the station at the north end by 60th Street has three street staircases, one carved into the outer perimeter of Central Park and the other two across Fifth Avenue. Replicas of BMT directional mosaics “QUEENS TRAINS” and “BROOKLYN TRAINS” are found on this side. The part-time side at Central Park South, just by the Plaza Hotel, formerly had a booth (closed in 2003) and three street staircases as well. Each mezzanine has one stair to each platform. Mosaics “5”, “Fifth Ave,” and the directional signs on each platform, are fully preserved with new tiles encircling around them.

This station was overhauled in the late 1970s. The MTA fixed the station's structure and overall appearance, replacing the original wall tiles, old signs, and incandescent lighting with 70's modern look wall tile band and tablet mosaics, signs and fluorescent lights. It also fixed staircases and platform edges. In 2002, the station received a major overhaul. It received state-of-art repairs as well as an upgrade of the station for ADA compliance and restoration the original late 1910s tiling. The MTA repaired the staircases, re-tiling for the walls, installed new tiling on the floors, upgraded the station's lights and the public address system, and installed ADA yellow safety threads along the platform edges, new signs, and new track-beds in both directions.

Fifth Avenue (Pittsburgh)

Fifth Avenue (sometimes spelled 5th Avenue) is one of the longest streets in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. It begins downtown and moves eastward for over five miles (9 km). Fifth Avenue passes by the Carlow University, the Cathedral of Learning and other buildings of the University of Pittsburgh, then forms the borders between Shadyside on the north and Squirrel Hill and Point Breeze to the south. Finally, after passing Chatham University, The Ellis School, and Mellon Park, it turns north and forms the border between Larimer on the west and North Point Breeze and Homewood (Pittsburgh) on the east. At the intersection with Frankstown Avenue its name becomes Washington Boulevard (PA 8) and descends a branch of Negley Run to meet Allegheny River Boulevard (PA 130) near the Highland Park Bridge.

At least 30 streets either cross or intersect with Fifth Avenue, including Penn Avenue, which intersects it twice (once in Downtown and again near Point Breeze). Forbes Avenue parallels it from Downtown through Uptown and Oakland before diverging at the University of Pittsburgh; they form a one-way pair through Uptown and Oakland (Forbes from Downtown toward Oakland, Fifth from Oakland toward Downtown).
