On the Third Day was released in 1973 and failed to enter the UK charts at the time, although it did reach the US charts. Side two of the album was recorded during or shortly after the sessions for ELO's LP ELO 2, but unlike its predecessor it contains shorter tracks. By contrast, the four songs on side one of the album were linked into a continuous suite. Violinist Mik Kaminski made his debut on side one of this album replacing Wilf Gibson, although Gibson plays on side two (plus the bonus tracks). Also, cellist Colin Walker left the line up around the same time, leaving Mike Edwards as lone cellist.
Of all other ELO albums, except for ELO 2, this might be considered closest in style to progressive rock, with some elaborate band arrangements and complicated musical segués between tracks. The Mini Moog synthesizer can be heard prominently on several tracks, particularly as lead instrument on the instrumental "Daybreaker". It was to be the last ELO album where Jeff Lynne attempted to re-create an orchestral sound in the studio by multi-tracking the cellos and solo violin of the band members - for the next album, a real orchestra would be hired. Marc Bolan played guitar on "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle" and "Dreaming of 4000", both originally uncredited, as well as on "Everyone's Born to Die", which was not released at the time but appears as a bonus track on the 2006 remaster.
In September 2006 the album was remastered and released again with bonus tracks, featuring the Hipgnosis album art from the original UK release. The bonus tracks "Auntie" (working title of "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle"), "Mambo" (working title of "Dreaming of 4000") and "Everyone's Born to Die" were recorded during the ELO 2 sessions.
All songs written by Jeff Lynne unless otherwise indicated.

The Third Day is a feature film released in 1965. It stars George Peppard and his then wife Elizabeth Ashley, and is a suspense thriller. It was largely ignored in cinemas and is rarely seen on television. It was directed by Jack Smight from a book by Joseph Hayes.
Steve Mallory has been involved in a car crash, and it appears he has killed his mistress, Holly Mitchell. Steve suffers from amnesia, he has no recollection whatever of the event. His wife is hostile and cold toward him, his father-in-law has been severely disabled by a stoke and his wife's cousin appears to hate his guts. Added to this is the sinister presence of Lester Aldrich, who turns out to be the downtrodden husband of the sleazy Holly.
The Third Day is an EP by English rock band Wire. It was released in 2000.
Third Day is a Christian rock band formed in Marietta, Georgia during the 1990s. The band was founded by lead singer Mac Powell, guitarist Mark Lee and former member Billy Wilkins. The other band members are bassist Tai Anderson and drummer David Carr. The band's name is a reference to the biblical accounts of Jesus' rising from the dead on the third day following his crucifixion. The band was inducted in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame on September 19, 2009. They have sold over 7 million albums in the United States and had 28 number one radio hits. Their fans are known as "Gomers" after a song on their second album about Gomer.
In 1991, high-schoolers Mac Powell and Mark Lee formed Third Day as a Christian music group with pianist Billy Wilkins and guitarist August McCoy. McCoy left the following year to pursue tertiary education. At a 1992 event at Lee's Church, Third Day performed alongside a band called the Bullard Family Singers, which featured David Carr and Tai Anderson. Third Day invited Carr and Anderson to join them shortly after.
Third Day is the reissue of the debut album from the Christian rock band of the same name. It was released in the spring of 1996 after the band signed with Reunion Records.
The band release a self-titled album in 1995 through the independent Gray Dot Records label. It was an early version of this album. The album sold 20,000 copies.
Third Day was well received by both critics and audience. As of 2000, it has been certified gold.
Creation brings an offering
As autumn leaves turn to gold
The trees bow down in highest praise
Now made bare before Your throne
The western sky's an amber blaze
At the end of the day
For everything must die to rise again
The winter's chill, a bitter cold
As sin and shame leave us to fall
The clouds so full of newborn snow
For grace to come and save us all
Within the darkest night of man
Was found Your saving hand
For everything must die to rise again
On the third day behold the King
On the third day death has no sting
On the third day we're forgiven and reconciled
The earth it groans in labor pains
As flowers stretch to heaven above
Your creatures sing a prophet's song
To be a gift of selfless love
The sun is rising in the east
And Your Spirit is unleashed
For everything must die to rise again
On the third day behold the King
On the third day death has no sting
On the third day we're forgiven and reconciled
And so we wait in joyful hope
For You to come and take us home
And so we join beneath the cross
In suffering from whence we go
The greatest act of sovereign grace
In the universe displayed
For everything must die to rise again
On the third day behold the King
On the third day death has no sting
On the third day we're forgiven and reconciled
On the third day the saints rejoice
On the third day we lift our voice
