On-and-On (April 24, 1956 – 1970) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who was a top runner for owner/breeder Calumet Farm and the sire of their 1968 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner, Forward Pass and the damsire of U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee Alydar.

Bred in Kentucky, On-and-On was trained by future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee Jimmy Jones The colt did not develop enough to compete in any of the 1959 U.S. Triple Crown races but went on to win the Ohio Derby and at age four earned wins in important events such as the Brooklyn McLennan and Tropical Park Handicaps, setting a new track record for a mile and eighth on dirt in the latter that was only 1/5 of a second off the world record.

"On and On" is a song by American singer/songwriter Stephen Bishop. The song became a major hit, peaking at number 11 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It was his greatest hit, and spent 28 weeks on the chart. In Canada, the song peaked at number 6.

On the U.S. Easy Listening chart, "On and On" peaked at number two. It reached number three on the corresponding Canadian chart.

Despite failing to crack the Top Ten, it was the 30th ranked single by the Billboard magazine year-end chart for 1977 as a result of its almost seven-month chart run. The song appears on his 1976 album, Careless.

The song was featured in the films Anger Management, How to Deal, The Hitcher, Margot at the Wedding, and Remarkable Power.

Kenny Rankin covered "On and On" in 1977. His version charted concurrently with Stephen Bishop's original, reaching #110 on the U.S. Billboard Bubbling Under chart.

Óðr

In Norse mythology, Óðr (Old Norse for the "Divine Madness, frantic, furious, vehement, eager", as a noun "mind, feeling" and also "song, poetry"; Orchard (1997) gives "the frenzied one") or Óð, sometimes angliziced as Odr or Od, is a figure associated with the major goddess Freyja. The Prose Edda and Heimskringla, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson, both describe Óðr as Freyja's husband and father of her daughter Hnoss. Heimskringla adds that the couple produced another daughter, Gersemi. A number of theories have been proposed about Óðr, generally that he is somehow a hypostasis of the deity Odin due to their similarities.

Etymology

The Old Norse noun óðr may be the origin of the theonym Óðinn (Anglicized as Odin), and it means "mind", "soul" or "spirit" (so used in stanza 18.1 of the Poetic Edda poem Völuspá). In addition, óðr can also mean "song", "poetry" and "inspiration", and it has connotations of "possession". It is derived from a Proto-Germanic *wōð- or *wōþ- and it is related to Gothic wôds ("raging", "possessed"), Old High German wuot ("fury" "rage, to be insane") and the Anglo-Saxon words wód ("fury", "rabies") and wóð ("song", "cry", "voice", "poetry", "eloquence"). Old Norse derivations include œði "strong excitation, possession".

Thor

In Norse mythology, Thor (/θɔːr/; from Old Norse Þórr) is a hammer-wielding god associated with thunder, lightning, storms, oak trees, strength, the protection of mankind, and also hallowing, healing and fertility. The cognate deity in wider Germanic mythology and paganism was known in Old English as Þunor and in Old High German as Donar (runic þonar ᚦᛟᚾᚨᚱ), stemming from a Common Germanic *Þunraz (meaning "thunder").

Ultimately stemming from Proto-Indo-European religion, Thor is a prominently mentioned god throughout the recorded history of the Germanic peoples, from the Roman occupation of regions of Germania, to the tribal expansions of the Migration Period, to his high popularity during the Viking Age, when, in the face of the process of the Christianization of Scandinavia, emblems of his hammer, Mjölnir, were worn in defiance and Norse pagan personal names containing the name of the god bear witness to his popularity.
