Old Fashioned glass

The Old Fashioned glass, lowball glass, or rocks glass is a short tumbler used for serving an alcoholic beverage, such as whisky, with ice cubes (“on the rocks”). It is also normally used to serve certain cocktails, such as the Old Fashioned, from which it receives its name.

Old Fashioned glasses typically have a wide brim and a thick base (or tunc), so that the non-liquid ingredients of a cocktail can be mashed using a muddler before the main liquid ingredients are added.

Old Fashioned glasses usually contain 6–10 US fl oz (180–300 ml). A double Old Fashioned glass (sometimes referred to by retailers as a DOF glass) contains 12–16 US fl oz (350–470 ml).

Old-fashioned (short story)

"Old-fashioned" is a science fiction short story by Isaac Asimov. The story was written at the request of Kim Armstrong, editor of Bell Telephone Magazine, with the stipulation that it be 3,000 words and center on a problem in communications. The author claimed that he had thought up a plotline before lunch while the editor was over. The story was duly written and published in February 1976. It was illustrated by Gerald McConnell in comic book style.

Plot summary

Two astro-miners in the asteroid belt, Estes and Funarelli, are badly injured when their spaceship is damaged by the tidal effects of an uncharted black hole. Their drive and communications systems are beyond repair and they have a finite supply of food and air.

In desperation, Estes hits on the idea of going outside the ship and throwing small rocks at the black hole. This will generate bursts of x-rays which, he hopes, will be detected by radio-astronomers on Earth.

He does this several times, attempting to time the bursts so that they spell out S-O-S in Morse code. The attempt works and within days, an unmanned drone ship with supplies arrives from Earth.

Handjob

A handjob is the manual stimulation of a male's penis or scrotum by another person to induce sexual pleasure, sometimes resulting in orgasm. The manual stimulation of a female's vagina, clitoris or rest of the vulva is fingering, while the manual stimulation of the genitals performed between two people is mutual masturbation.

Prevalence in massage parlors

In massage parlor parlance, the giving of a handjob by a masseuse, whether as part of the massage itself or directly after it, is called a "happy ending".

According to a 1975 study by A. J. Velarde, in an unnamed American West Coast city, provision of a "hand job", where the woman gave the client a handjob, was one of the services masseuses were employed to give. Subsequent newspaper publicity for this practice caused local councils to impose licensing requirements on masseuses similar to the ones imposed on prostitutes. This licensing led to increased expectations in massage parlor clients, who expected that more than a handjob would be available, that is, sexual intercourse. Because the masseuses themselves considered that they had nothing to lose by acting as prostitutes, and because the local council treated them as prostitutes anyway, masseuses often complied, and thus attracted more prostitution to the city.
