Black Jack (stamp)

Black Jack or Blackjack was the 2-Cent denomination United States postage stamp issued from July 1, 1863 to 1869, is generally referred to as the "Black Jack" due to the large portraiture of the United States President, Andrew Jackson on its face printed in pitch black.

The stamp was issued to fulfill a need for a reduced rate, 2-Cent denomination for newspaper, magazine, and local deliveries; and was often used to "make up" higher rates, or split in half to make up lower ones (a 1-Cent stamp) due to shortages at the local post office.

During the Civil War, the "Black Jack" was supposed to have been favored by both North and South, but as soon as the South got news of the North making a stamp depicting one of their own heroes, they printed a 2-Cent stamp depicting the same portrait of Jackson on their own 'Red Jack' postage stamp in reaction.

After the War was over, poverty inspired people to wash off the cancellation from the stamps and attempt to use them again. The Government then decided to put an antitheft device onto the stamps known as a grill. This grill, which consisted of various rows of tiny indentations into the stamps, was supposed to make it impossible to wash off the cancellations without being detected; but people usually got around this by bisecting the stamp, and then reusing that portion that didn't have a cancellation on it. The first grill applied to a Black Jack stamp is known as the "Z" grill, introduced in January 1868. Over the next few months, the Post Office successively employed three smaller grill patterns (D, E and F) in the production of this stamp.

Black Jack (Australian band)

Black Jack was an Australian Heavy metal/classical band that was active in the 1980/90's.

History

Blackjack formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1979, releasing a demo that same year and another in 1983. An EP on the Metal for Melbourne label in 1985, Five Pieces o' Eight, was recorded at 'Saturn studio' with George Simak (Taramis). A much anticipated first and second album was recorded, but never released, due to work loads and the death of two of their members. Their musical style included elements of NWOBHM, classical, power metal and doom metal. They were fronted by the brothers Rick and Jonny Giles, direct descendants of Thomas Giles (who was hung for piracy), and are still currently active, re-recording at their own studio/live venue 'Guruland Studios' and 'Voodoo Lounge' with engineer Kevin Welgus. There is a serious chance of a live re-appearance as rehearsals between the members are currently underway. At the moment, they play more conventional rock under the guise of 'Rick Giles' CRACKERJACK' and a black metal project 'POISON BLOOD' featuring guest stalwart Peter Hobbs from 'ANGEL OF DEATH' in Victoria. They were among the first to fuse pirate themes into metal.

    White and Black in chess

In chess, the player who moves first is referred to as "White" and the player who moves second is referred to as "Black". Similarly, the pieces that each conducts are called, respectively, "the white pieces" and "the black pieces". The pieces are often not literally white and black, but some other colors (usually a light color and a dark color, respectively). The 64 squares of the chessboard, which is colored in a checkered pattern, are likewise referred to as "white squares" or "light squares" on the one hand, and "black squares" or "dark squares" on the other. In most cases, the squares are not actually white and black, but a light color and a contrasting dark color. For example, the squares on plastic boards are often off-white ("buff") and green, while those on wood boards are often light brown and dark brown.

In old chess writings, the sides are often called Red and Black, because those were the two colors of ink then commonly available when hand-drawing or printing chess position diagrams.

    Black (Lita Ford album)

Black is Lita Ford's sixth studio album and featured a change of style in her music, compared to her other albums. Black sees Ford move into other musical styles such as blues and grunge, while still maintaining her metal and rock roots. There would be a 14-year gap between Black and her next studio album, 2009's Wicked Wonderland.
