Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City is the capital and largest city of the state of Oklahoma. The county seat of Oklahoma County, the city ranks 27th among United States cities in population. The population grew following the 2010 Census, with the population estimated to have increased to 620,602 as of July 2014. As of 2014, the Oklahoma City metropolitan area had a population of 1,322,429, and the Oklahoma City-Shawnee Combined Statistical Area had a population of 1,459,758 (Chamber of Commerce) residents, making it Oklahoma's largest metropolitan area. Oklahoma City's city limits extend into Canadian, Cleveland, and Pottawatomie counties, though much of those areas outside of the core Oklahoma County area are suburban or rural (watershed). The city ranks as the eighth-largest city in the United States by land area (including consolidated city-counties; it is the largest city in the United States by land area whose government is not consolidated with that of a county or borough).

Oklahoma City, lying in the Great Plains region, features one of the largest livestock markets in the world. Oil, natural gas, petroleum products and related industries are the largest sector of the local economy. The city is situated in the middle of an active oil field and oil derricks dot the capitol grounds. The federal government employs large numbers of workers at Tinker Air Force Base and the United States Department of Transportation's Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center (these two sites house several offices of the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Department's Enterprise Service Center, respectively).

Santa Fe Depot (Oklahoma City)

Santa Fe Depot, also known as the Santa Fe Transit Hub, is a historic train station located in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Amtrak's Heartland Flyer makes daily round-trip service from Oklahoma City to Fort Worth, Texas. The station is the designated Intermodal Transit Hub for the region and as of 2016 is under renovation to accommodate this enhanced use. Santa Fe shares the same station ID, OKC, with the IATA code for Oklahoma City's International airport, Will Rogers World Airport.

History

The station was built in 1934 by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. It is an Art Deco structure located in downtown Oklahoma City at 100 South E.K. Gaylord Boulevard. It was served by the Santa Fe Railway's Texas Chief line, which later became the Lone Star under Amtrak. Amtrak discontinued the service in 1979. Subsequently, the station was vacant for 20 years and began to deteriorate.

In 1998, Jim Brewer, a developer responsible for creating the nearby Bricktown entertainment district, purchased the station from Santa Fe Railway and oversaw a renovation using $2 million funds provided through the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) to make it ADA-compliant and usable again. Amtrak entered an agreement with Brewer Entertainment to use the station as one of the end points of the new Heartland Flyer line, connecting to Fort Worth. Service began in 1999. Another $3.1 million renovation was completed in 2007, and additional ADA features were added with a $30,000 project following the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Oklahoma City Stars

The Oklahoma City Stars are the athletic teams that represent Oklahoma City University, located in Oklahoma City, in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The university fields 17 varsity sports teams, and these teams compete in the NAIA and the Sooner Athletic Conference in all sports except women's wrestling which competes in the Women's College Wrestling Association.

Until 1986, the Stars competed in the NCAA Division I Horizon League, which was known as the Midwestern City Conference at that time.

Men's basketball

Oklahoma City has made 18 NAIA tournament appearances: 1987, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010. As a member of the NCAA, Oklahoma City went to the NCAA tournament 11 times, the most of any school no longer a member of the NCAA. OCU appeared in the NCAA tournament in 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, and 1973; and the NIT twice, in 1959 and 1968.

Oklahoma City has had 71 Major League Baseball Draft selections since the draft began in 1965.

Oklahoma City Stars (ice hockey)

The Oklahoma City Stars were a minor league professional ice hockey team in the Central Hockey League from 1978 to 1982. They were affiliated with the Minnesota North Stars of the National Hockey League.

The team was run by head coach/general manager Ted Hampson, except for their final season when Tom McVie was the coach. The team made it to the league playoffs in their final two years, but lost both in the first round.

City Stars (FC Kuusysi)

City Stars was a football club from Lahti in Finland. The club was formed in 1982 and their home ground is at the Kisapuiston kenttä. The team last plays in the Kakkonen (Second Division). The Head coach was to this time Petri Järvinen.

History

City Stars spent many seasons in the lower divisions of the Finnish football league following their formation in 1982. The year 2006 saw a huge change in fortunes when they won Section 2 of the Kolmonen (Helsinki and Uusimaa). The team then won the promotion play-off group to seal promotion.

In early 2007 City Stars became part of the Lahti club, FC Kuusysi, and established their own business unit within the organisation. At the same time City Stars received support from Petri Pasanen, the Finnish international, and Kari Kangasaho, the Kuusysi coach. In 2007-2008 seasons the club also formed a cooperative link with FC Lahti.

City Stars played two seasons in the Kakkonen (Second Division), the third tier of Finnish football from 2007 to 2008 before relegation back to the Kolmonen (Third Division). Their stay at the lower level was short-lived as another promotion in 2009 saw them back in the Kakkonen for 2010 after narrowly beating local rivals Salpausselän Reipas by 2 points.
