"OK Fred" is a song and single by Jamaican singer-songwriter, John Holt. It was first released in 1971.
Errol Dunkley states that the song is about an up-town girl who falls for a down-town guy who is a non-conformist in the way he dresses and wants to become care-free like him. Jamaican parents might tell their unkempt children, "Fix up youself, put you shirt in you trousers, you look like a yaga yaga" [sic]. AllMusic gave a different version, saying the song describes the singer's prowess and technique with the opposite sex.
Holt's version features Vin Gordon on trombone. It was produced by Coxsone Dodd. The song was covered with greater chart success by Dunkley.
Holt's version did not chart in the UK. Dunkley's version, possibly the version most people are familiar with, reached 11 in the UK in 1979 staying for 11 weeks.
The stars won't come out if they know that you're about
Cause they couldn't match the glow in your eyes
And, oh, who am I ? Just an ordinary guy
Tryin hard to win me first prize
Oh my Candida
We could make it together
The further from here girl the better
Where the air is fresh and clean
Oh my Candida
Just take my hand and I'll lead ya
I promise that life will be sweeter
'Cause it said so in my dreams
The future looks bright, the gypsy told me so last night
Said she saw our children playing in the sunshine
And there were you and I in a house, baby, no lie
And all these things were yours, and they were mine
Oh my Candida
We could make it together
The further from here girl the better
Where the air is fresh and clean
Oh my Candida
Just take my hand and I'll lead ya
I promise that life will be sweeter
'Cause it said so in my dreams
Oh my Candida
We could make it together
The further from here girl the better
Where the air is fresh and clean
Oh my Candida
Just take my hand and I'll lead ya
