Offside (sport)

Offside, often pluralized as Offsides in American English, is a rule used by several different team sports regulating aspects of player positioning. It is particularly used in field sports with rules deriving from the various codes of football, such as association football, bandy, rugby and field hockey, as well as in ice hockey.

Offside rules are generally designed to ensure that players play together as a team, and do not consistently position one or a few players near the opponent's goal to try to receive a "Hail Mary pass" for an easy goal without opposing players nearby. However, the application and enforcement of offside rules can be complicated, and can sometimes be confusing for new players as well as for spectators.

History

The word "offside" comes from a military term for a man trapped behind enemy lines, where he is said to be "off the strength of his side". Offside rules date back to codes of football developed at English public schools in the early nineteenth century. These offside rules were often much stricter than in modern games. In some of them, a player was "off his side" if he was standing in front of the ball. This was similar to the current offside law in rugby, which penalizes any player between the ball and the opponent's goal. By contrast, the original Sheffield Rules had no offside rule, and players known as "kick throughs" were positioned permanently near the opponents' goal.

Sport (US magazine)

SPORT magazine was an American sports magazine. Launched in September 1946 by the New York-based publisher, Macfadden Publications, SPORT pioneered the generous use of color photography – it carried eight full color plates in its first edition.

SPORT predated the launch of Sports Illustrated by eight years, and is remembered for bringing several editorial innovations to the genre, as well as creating, in 1955, the SPORT Magazine Award. The SPORT Award, given initially to the outstanding player in baseball’s World Series (Johnny Podres of the Brooklyn Dodgers was the inaugural winner), was later expanded to include the pre-eminent post-season performer in the other three major North American team sports. What made SPORT the most distinctive from Sports Illustrated, however, was the fact it was a monthly magazine as opposed to SI's weekly distribution.

SPORT was published continually between its launch and August 2000, when its then-owner, British publisher EMAP PLC, made the decision to close the money-losing title. Today, the photo archive of SPORT, which represents one of the most significant collections of 20th century sports photography in North America, is housed in Toronto and Vancouver, Canada, at The SPORT Gallery.

Sport (Turkmen TV channel)

Turkmenistan Sport (Turkmen: Türkmenistan Sport) is a Turkmenian sport TV channel of State Committee of Turkmenistan on TV, Radio and Film. Was aired on January 1, 2012 under the title "Sport". Broadcast in the Turkmen language. The channel broadcasts all sports - football, hockey, basketball, figure skating, boxing, swimming, volleyball, and other sports.

History

In early December 2011 at a government meeting, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed a decree "for the widespread adoption of the country's principles of a healthy lifestyle, multiply thrust of youth to the sport, the conclusion of Turkmen sport at the international level" the creation of Turkmenistan channel Sport.

Convenience TV is designed to promote the principles of a healthy way of life, to promote the development of mass sports movement and sport. Broadcast is ad-free.

The channel is broadcast their own championships Turkmenistan with professional journalists and commentators. In the summer of 2012, first broadcast all the matches of EURO 2012 and the 2012 Olympic Games, daily, live, in the Turkmen language.

Vaasan Sport

Sport, known by its full name as Hockey Team Vaasan Sport OY, is a Finnish ice hockey team playing in Liiga, and is based at Vaasa Arena (capacity 4448) in Vaasa. The team was established in 1939 as IF Sport (Idrottsföreningen Sport).

History

Vaasan Sport was founded in 1939 as IF Sport. The team was involved in the founding of the Finnish top division Liiga, formerly known as SM-Liiga, in 1975, but was relegated only one year later after the 1975-1976 season (roster for their first and only SM-Liiga season).

After the relegation Sport played in the Finnish 1st Division (since then renamed to Mestis), until they were relegated in 1991-1992 to the Finnish Second Division. Climbing back up to the 1st division proved to be a tough task and wasn't accomplished until spring 1997, with the game-winning goal of the deciding game against Kiekko-67 being scored by Kari Teräväinen in overtime.

The 2008-09 season was a success as Sport won the Mestis championship. However, in the league qualification series the team lost the last game to Ässät in a best-of-7 format, thus remaining in Mestis. The overall qualification series were close as Sport at one point was a single goal away from beating Ässät in overtime and being promoted to Liiga, but was unable to score.

Offside (2006 Swedish film)

Offside is a Swedish film from 2006, directed by Mårten Klingberg and starring Jonas Karlsson, Torkel Petersson, Ingvar Hirdwall, Göran Ragnerstam and Brendan Coyle.

Story

The film is about a Swedish football team, Stenfors BK, who used to play in Allsvenskan once upon a time, but now plays in one of the lowest divisions. The humiliation is complete. But no more! If Stenfors BK won't start winning and climb up some divisions, the team will be disbanded.

So now, the struggle to survive starts. But it's tough, especially because Anders, the team captain, has trouble at home with his wife Åsa.

But one night, Anders' friend and team mate, Kent, calls from England and says he has found their saviour. The man that Kent has found is the legendary, former Liverpool player Duncan Miller.

But when "Killer Miller" arrives at Stenfors, the team founds out that he is a little more former player than what they had expected...

Offside is a 2009 Australian romantic comedy film written and directed by Gian Carlo Petraccaro (under the name Gian Carlo), and produced by Matthew Salleh at Urtext Film Productions.

Plot

Charlie (Terry Rogers) is the good-looking, hard-working brother who runs Uncle Vito's cafe, as well as the local soccer club. He enjoys casual success with women, but is careful to avoid commitment. The other brother, Frank (Peter Evangelista) is an unemployed dreamer who studies the Joga Bonito, Total Football and Johann Cruyff, while functioning as the coach of their suburban football team. For Charlie it is all about winning; for Frank it is all about the pursuit of excellence.

Meanwhile, their suburban team is made up of old school friends who have a range of issues of their own. Damon (Peter Michell) is married to Isabella (Elena Carapetis), who is slowly turning her ocker husband into an Italian. Angelo (Sam Tripodi) is married to Lisa (Kimberley Hart); she wants him to focus on starting a family. Kon (Frank Romeo) and Mark (Saxon Cordeaux) are slackers; they work for Sarah (Chloe Gardner), who fancies Charlie. And Charlie fancies Katie (Georgii Speakman), the unattainable sexy blonde with a secret.

Penalty (gridiron football)

In American football and Canadian football, a penalty is a sanction called against a team for a violation of the rules, called a foul. Officials initially signal penalties by tossing a bright yellow (American Football) or orange (Canadian football) colored "penalty flag" onto the field toward or at the spot of a foul. Many penalties result in moving the football toward the offending team's end zone, usually either 5, 10, or 15 yards, depending on the penalty. Most penalties against the defensive team also result in giving the offense an automatic first down, while a few penalties against the offensive team cause them to automatically lose a down. In some cases, depending on the spot of the foul, the ball is moved half the distance to the goal line rather than the usual number of yards, or the defense scores an automatic safety.

Rationale

Because football is a high-contact sport requiring a balance between offense and defense, many rules exist that regulate equality, safety, contact, and actions of players on each team. It is very difficult to always avoid violating these rules without giving up too much of an advantage. Thus, an elaborate system of fouls and penalties has been developed to "let the punishment fit the crime" and maintain a balance between following the rules and keeping a good flow of the game. Players and coaches are constantly looking for ways to find an advantage that stretches the limitations imposed by the rules. Also, the frequency and severity of fouls can make a large difference in the outcome of a game, so coaches are constantly looking for ways to minimize the number and severity of infractions committed by their players.
