Obuasi Gold Mine

The Obuasi Gold Mine is an open-pit and underground gold mine situated near Obuasi, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana and Obuasi Gold Mine is one of the top-10 largest gold mines on Earth. The operation is owned by AngloGold Ashanti. The mine is in Adansi North District.

Gold mining began at Obuasi Gold Mine more than 112 years ago, in 1897 when it was originally known as the Ashanti Mine.

In 2008, AngloGold Ashanti's Ghana operations, consisting of Obuasi and the Iduapriem Gold Mine, contributed 11% to the company's annual production. Both mines became part of AngloGold Ashanti when AngloGold merged with the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation in 2004.

In 2009, the mine employed over 5,700 people. The mine experienced two fatalities in 2008 and one in 2009.

History

Mining at Obuasi begun in 1897, then referred to as the Ashanti Mine.

In an interview Kwesi Enyan, the Managing Director of the mine, announced that the mine, while potentially rich, faces challenges like returning the mine to profitability, addressing social and environmental issues, improving community engagement and illegal mining. The mine was criticised as early as 1975 for environmental pollution, and continues to do so.

Gold (1974 film)

Gold is a 1974 thriller film starring Roger Moore and Susannah York and directed by Peter R. Hunt. It was based on the 1970 novel Gold Mine by Wilbur Smith. Moore plays Rod Slater, General Manager of a South African gold mine, who is instructed by his boss Steyner (Bradford Dillman) to break through an underground dike into what he is told is a rich seam of gold. Meanwhile, he falls in love with Steyner's wife Terry, played by York. In the United States, the film was only released as part of a double bill.

Plot

The film begins with a tunnel collapse at the Sonderditch mine, in a scene that establishes the courage of Slater and his chief miner, 'Big King', and the bond of trust between them. This is contrasted with the contempt with which some other white managers treat the black miners. It is soon revealed that the collapse was no accident, but part of a plan by a London-based criminal syndicate, which includes the mine-owner's son-in-law Manfred Steyner, to destroy the mine so that the syndicate members can profit from share-dealing. This will be done by drilling through a deep underground wall or 'dyke' which is all that prevents an adjacent reservoir of water from flooding the mine.

Gold Mine is a tile-laying board game for 2 to 6 players, ages 8 and up. It was designed by Chris James and published by Stratus Games.

In the game, players excavate a maze of mine tunnels by placing tiles that represent the features of an underground mine. Players also control miniature miners who traverse the mine collecting gold. In addition, miners can traverse secret passages, challenge other miners for gold, and direct bats toward other miners to chase them away from their current position in the mine.

The object of the game is to be the first to collect a certain number of gold nuggets and exit the mine.

Components

The Miners are plastic miniatures that are roughly 1¹⁄₈ inches tall and 1/2 inch in diameter. The Miners consist of various colors (red, green, blue, yellow, black and white) and depict a pudgy, faceless miner complete with overalls, large boots, pickaxe and helmet with a head lamp.

Obuasi

Edward Ennin is the member of parliament for the constituency. He was elected on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) won a majority of 19,543 votes to become the MP. He had also represented the constituency in the 4th Republic parliament.
