Over (cricket)

In the sport of cricket, an over is a set of six balls bowled from one end of a cricket pitch.

In a normal over, a single bowler delivers six balls in succession, from one end of the pitch, to the batsman at the other end. After six deliveries, the umpire calls 'over'; the fielding team switches ends, and a different bowler is selected to bowl an over from the opposite end of the pitch, while the batsmen do not change ends. The captain of the fielding team decides which bowler will bowl any given over, and no bowler may bowl two overs in succession.

Overview

An over must consist of six legal deliveries. If the bowler bowls a wide or a no ball, that illegal delivery is not counted towards the six-ball tally, and another delivery will need to be bowled in its place.

In the event that a bowler is injured, or is sent out of the attack by the umpire (for disciplinary reasons, such as bowling beamers), during the middle of an over, a team-mate completes any remaining deliveries.

Because a bowler may not bowl consecutive overs, the general tactic is for the captain to appoint two bowlers to alternate overs from opposite ends. When one bowler tires or becomes ineffective, the captain will replace that bowler with another. The period of time during which a bowler bowls every alternate over is known as a spell.

Overs (song)

"Overs" is a song by American music duo Simon & Garfunkel from their fourth studio album, Bookends (1968).

Background

"Overs" was one of many songs completed during the duo's sessions with John Simon, alongside "Fakin' It," "Save the Life of My Child" and "Punky's Dilemma". The song concerns an old couple beginning to tire of one another. In their 1968 appearance on Kraft Music Hall, Simon explained that "Overs" is a companion piece to their earlier composition, "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her"; that song concerns the belief in true love, while "Overs" relates to the loss of that belief.

It has been suggested the song, which was originally written but cut from The Graduate (1968), was inspired by the film’s depiction of two lovers (the Robinsons) in a loveless marriage. The lyrics contain almost no rhyme.

Composition

"Overs" is a departure from Simon’s earlier work in that it reveals "increasing independence from standard diatonic, major/minor, and/or modal rock- and folk-based styles." As a result, it "displays a logical consequence of both of these trends: a more jazz-oriented style," including a larger selection of chords and looser form. The song contains multiple instances of wordplay related to the word over, including the final line, "I stop and think it over."

Oeversee

Oeversee (Danish: Oversø) is a municipality in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is situated approximately 10 km south of Flensburg. The Oeversee municipality was merged with Sankelmark on March 1, 2008. The new municipality is, however, still called Oeversee.

Oeversee is part of the Amt ("collective municipality") Oeversee. The seat of the Amt is located in Tarp, which is close to Idstedt and Stolk, among other smaller towns in the area.

The area was the place of many battles between the Germans and the Danes. The village of Oeversee (or to be more precise, Sankelmark) witnessed, for example, a battle between Austrian and Danish forces in the Second Schleswig War on February 6, 1864. There are still annual memorial services held for this event and celebrating the helpfulness of the citizens of Flensburg.
The Austrian city of Graz named an alley and a school after Oeversee in recognition of this event, as the Austrian troops had been based in Graz. Returning the favor, Oeversee named a public square after Graz (Grazer Platz).
