Union (American Civil War)

During the American Civil War, the Union was the term used to refer to the United States of America, and specifically to the national government and the 23 free states and five border slave states that supported it. The Union was opposed by 11 southern slave states that formed the Confederate States of America, or "the Confederacy".

All of the Union's states provided soldiers for the U.S. Army; the border areas also sent large numbers of soldiers to the Confederacy. The Border states played a major role as a supply base for the Union invasion of the Confederacy. The Northeast provided the industrial resources for a mechanized war producing large quantities of munitions and supplies, as well as financing for the war. The Midwest provided soldiers, food and horses, as well as financial support and training camps. Army hospitals were set up across the Union. Most states had Republican governors who energetically supported the war effort and suppressed anti-war subversion in 1863–64. The Democratic Party strongly supported the war in 1861 but was split by 1862 between the War Democrats and the anti-war element led by the "Copperheads". The Democrats made major electoral gains in 1862 in state elections, most notably in New York. They lost ground in 1863, especially in Ohio. In 1864 the Republicans campaigned under the Union Party banner, which attracted many War Democrats and soldiers and scored a landslide victory for Lincoln and his entire ticket.

North (Elvis Costello album)

North is a 2003 album by Elvis Costello. It reached 44 in the UK Albums Chart, 57 in the US chart and No. 1 in the US Traditional Jazz chart.

Coming after the return-to-form rock and roll of When I Was Cruel, North is an intimate album of ballads, reportedly inspired by Costello's relationship with Diana Krall. The album received mixed reviews.

A limited edition also contains a DVD with two solo piano performances by Costello ("North," "Fallen") and a promo video for "Still". There is also a code included inside the package for a free download of the outtake title track "North," which is provided in the Windows Media Audio (.wma) format.

29 Nights

29 Nights is the début album by Danni Leigh. It was released in 1998 via Decca Records, and produced by Michael Knox and Mark Wright. The album includes the single "If the Jukebox Took Teardrops," which peaked at 57 on the Hot Country Songs charts.

Charlotte Dillon of Allmusic rated the album four stars out of five, praising the neotraditionalist country sound as well as the appearance of co-writes by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard.

24 Nights

24 Nights is a live album by Eric Clapton, recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England, in 1990 and 1991. It was released on 8 October 1991.

Background

The album is a "best of" from the 42 concerts Eric Clapton did at the Royal Albert Hall in those two years. Clapton set a record by playing a run of 24 nights at the London Royal Albert Hall between 5 February and 9 March 1991, following an 18-night run in 1990. Clapton reportedly was not satisfied with the 1990 concert recordings and delayed the release of a CD until after the "24 Nights" of the 1991 dates. These concerts were performed with 4 different instrumental formations, 4-piece, blues, 9-piece and orchestra nights, the last featuring the National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Michael Kamen. The cover illustration is by Peter Blake.

10.000 Nights of Thunder

"10.000 Nights of Thunder" is the second single by Alphabeat.

It was released in the UK as "10,000 Nights" in anticipation of "This Is Alphabeat", the international version of their debut album.

The band played a live semi-acoustic version of the track in Jo Whiley's Live Lounge on BBC Radio 1, together with a cover version of Sam Sparro's Black and Gold.

An instrumental version of the track was used as background music by the BBC during their daily Beijing 2008 Olympics highlights show.

Charts

"10.000 Nights of Thunder" peaked in Denmark at 1, where it stayed for one week. In the UK the song entered at #23 on downloads alone, and climbed to #4 once the physical single had been released. On 27 July 2008 the song moved up four places from #40 to #36, before dropping out of the top 40.
