North Lanarkshire

North Lanarkshire (Scots: North Lanrikshire, Scottish Gaelic: Siorrachd Lannraig a Tuath) is one of 32 council areas of Scotland. It borders onto the northeast of the City of Glasgow and contains much of Glasgow's suburbs and commuter towns and villages. It also borders East Dunbartonshire, Falkirk, Stirling, South Lanarkshire and West Lothian. The council covers parts of the traditional counties of Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire and Stirlingshire.

The area was formed in 1996, largely from the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth, Motherwell and Monklands districts and significant elements of Strathclyde Regional Council.

North Lanarkshire (UK Parliament constituency)

North (or Northern) Lanarkshire was a county constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (Westminster) from 1868 to 1885 and from 1918 to 1983. It elected one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post voting system.

Boundaries

1868 to 1885

The Representation of the People (Scotland) Act 1868 provided that the North Lanarkshire constituency was to consist of the parishes of Avondale, Barony, Blantyre, Bothwell, Cadder, Cambuslang, Carmunnock, City Parish of Glasgow, Dalziel, East Kilbride, Glassford, Hamilton, New Monkland, Old Monkland, Rutherglen and so much of the parishes of Govan and of Cathcart as is situated in Lanarkshire.

1918 to 1983

From 1918 the Northern Lanarkshire constituency consisted of "The parts of the Lower Ward and Middle Ward County Districts which are contained within the parishes of Glasgow, Cadder, New Monkland, Shotts, and Cambusnethan, exclusive of any burghs or portions of burghs situated therein."

Lanarkshire

Lanarkshire, also called the County of Lanark (Scottish Gaelic: Siorrachd Lannraig, Scots: Lanrikshire) is a historic county in the central Lowlands of Scotland.

Historically, Lanarkshire was the most populous county in Scotland and, in earlier times, had considerably greater boundaries, including neighbouring Renfrewshire until 1402. In modern times, it is bounded to the north by Stirlingshire and a detached portion of Dunbartonshire, to the northeast by Stirlingshire, West Lothian, to the east by Peeblesshire, to the southeast and south by Dumfriesshire, to the southwest by Dumfriesshire and Ayrshire and to the west by Ayrshire, Renfrewshire and Dunbartonshire.

Lanarkshire was historically divided between two administrative areas. In the mid-18th century it was divided again into three wards: the upper, middle and lower wards with their administrative centres at Lanark, Hamilton and Glasgow, respectively, and remained this way until the Local Government Act of 1889. Other significant settlements include East Kilbride, Motherwell, Airdrie, Coatbridge, Blantyre, Cambuslang, Rutherglen, Wishaw and Carluke.

Lanarkshire (Parliament of Scotland constituency)

Before the Acts of Union 1707, the barons of the shire of Lanark elected commissioners to represent them in the unicameral Parliament of Scotland and in the Convention of the Estates.

From 1708 Lanarkshire was represented by one Member of Parliament in the House of Commons of Great Britain.
