North East MRT Line

The North East Line (NEL) is the third Mass Rapid Transit line in Singapore and the world's second longest fully underground, automated and driverless, rapid transit line after the Circle Line. The line is 20 km long with 16 stations. Travelling from one end of this line to the other end takes 33 minutes. This line is coloured purple in the rail map.

Overview

As the name implies, the line connects central Singapore to the north-eastern part of the island. Transfer to the North South Line is provided at Dhoby Ghaut, to the East West Line at Outram Park and to the Circle Line at Serangoon, Dhoby Ghaut and HarbourFront. The North East Line interchanges with the Downtown Line at Chinatown and Little India. The North East Line will interchange with the future Thomson-East Coast Line at Outram Park. It passes through the busy areas such as Chinatown, Clarke Quay and Dhoby Ghaut of which it is home to the historical and cultural value, and through the mature and new residential estates at Potong Pasir, Serangoon, Hougang, Sengkang and Punggol. The North East Line passes through the Eu Tong Sen Street, Serangoon Road, Bendemeer Underpass, Upper Serangoon Road and the Upper Serangoon Viaduct. This line is the first in Singapore to be entirely underground and the first line to be operated by SBS Transit.

Points of the compass

The points of the compass are points on a compass, specifically on the compass rose, marking divisions of the four cardinal directions: North, South, East, West. The number of points may be only the 4 cardinal points, or the 8 principal points adding the intercardinal (or ordinal) directions northeast (NE), southeast (SE), southwest (SW), and northwest (NW). In meteorological usage further intermediate points are added to give the sixteen points of a wind compass. Finally, at the most complete in European tradition, are found the full thirty-two points of the mariner's compass. In ancient China 24 points of the compass were used.

In the mariner's exercise of boxing the compass, all thirty-two points of the compass are named in clockwise order. The names of intermediate points are formed by the initials of the cardinal directions and their intermediate ordinal directions, and are very handy to refer to a heading (or course or azimuth) in a general or colloquial fashion, without having to resort to computing or recalling degrees. For most applications, the minor points have been superseded by degrees measured clockwise from North.

Geography

The district is bounded by 24th to the west, San Pablo Avenue to the east, Macdonald and Ohio Avenues to the south and southeast respectively, and lastly Bush and Moran Avenues to the north.Richmond Heights lies to the east and borders the neighborhood along San Pablo Avenue.

Infrastructure

Salesian High School is located on the northern end of the area. The Macdonald 80 Shopping Center is a major shopping area for the community on the southern end; the area around the center features grocery stores, banks, and local small businesses.

The community is governed by the city of Richmond directly and has its own neighborhood council the North & East Neighborhood Council that delegates between the Central Richmond communities residents and businesses with local government. The council is headquartered at the Recreation Center at 3230 Macdonald Avenue.

31 North 62 East

Coordinates: 31°00′N 62°00′E / 31.00°N 62.00°E / 31.00; 62.00 31 North 62 East is an independent psychological thriller film released in September 2009. The title refers to a point in south-western Afghanistan near Zaranj and the Iranian border.

It was written by brothers Leofwine Loraine and Tristan Loraine with the first draft of the screen play being completed on 2 May 2008. Principal photography commenced on 21 July 2008 with Tristan Loraine as director and producer. The film cast includes John Rhys-Davies, Marina Sirtis, Heather Peace and Craig Fairbrass.

The production company was Fact Not Fiction Films and the director of photography was Sue Gibson, president of the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC).

The film music was composed by Paul Garbutt and David Leo Kemp and also includes an appearance by New Zealand born violinist/composer Fiona Pears.

Plot

31 North 62 East tells the story of a British Prime Minister who gives up the position of an Special Air Service (SAS) unit in Afghanistan to ensure a UK £80 billion arms deal goes through, assuring his re-election. All soldiers in the SAS unit are thought to have died, until two months later, when one of them, a female captain, is found by Italian special forces and returns to the UK to investigate.
