North Circular Road

The North Circular Road (officially the A406 and sometimes known as simply the North Circular) is a 25.7-mile-long (41.4 km) ring road around Central London in England. It runs from Chiswick in the west to Woolwich in the east, and connects the various suburbs in the area, including Ealing, Willesden, Wembley, Southgate, Tottenham, Woodford and Barking. Together with its counterpart, the South Circular Road, it forms a ring road through the Outer London suburbs. This ring road does not make a complete circuit of the city, being C-shaped rather than a complete loop as the crossing of the River Thames in the east is made on the Woolwich Ferry.

The road was originally designed to connect local industrial communities together in addition to bypassing London, and was constructed in the 1920s and '30s. It received significant upgrades after the Second World War, and was at one point planned to be upgraded to motorway as part of the controversial and ultimately cancelled London Ringways scheme in the late 1960s. In the early 1990s, the road was extended to bypass Barking and meet the A13 north of Woolwich.

The North Circular Road (Irish: An Cuarbhóthar Thuaidh) - designated as R101 regional road - is an important thoroughfare on the northside of Dublin, in Ireland. The regional road was long considered the northern boundary of the city and still separates the city centre from the inner suburbs. It runs from the Phoenix Park in the west through Phibsboro, to North Wall in the east and is the location of a number of important institutions, The Mater Hospital, Dalymount Park and Mountjoy Prison are on the North Circular Road and both Croke Park and St. Brendan's Hospital are nearby.

The R101 and the NCR are the same for most of their length; the entire NCR forms a section of the R101. In the west the R101 connects the NCR to Parkgate Street via the short Infirmary Road ; at the eastern end the R101 becomes Portland Row after the junction with Summerhill. It continues the northern loop through Saville Place , then turning east for its final kilometre via Sheriff Street (Upper) before terminating at North Wall Road (the R131).

A ring road (also known as beltline, beltway, circumferential (high)way, loop or orbital) is a road or a series of connected roads encircling a town or city.

Nomenclature

The name "ring road" is used for the majority of metropolitan circumferential routes in the European Union, such as the Berliner Ring, the Brussels Ring, the Amsterdam Ring, the Boulevard Périphérique around Paris and the Leeds Inner and Outer ring roads. Australia and India also use the term ring road, as in Melbourne's Western Ring Road and Hyderabad's Outer Ring Road. In Canada the term is the most commonly used, with "orbital" also used to a much lesser extent.

In Europe, some ring roads, particularly those of motorway standard which are longer in length, are often known as "orbital motorways". Examples include the London Orbital (188 km), Rome Orbital (68 km) and Manchester Orbital (56 km).

In the United States, many ring roads are called beltlines, beltways, or loops, such as the Capital Beltway around Washington, D.C. Some ring roads, such as Washington's Capital Beltway, use "Inner Loop" and "Outer Loop" terminology for directions of travel, since cardinal (compass) directions cannot be signed uniformly around the entire loop. The term 'ring road' is occasionally – and inaccurately – used interchangeably with the term 'bypass'.
