Nob Hill, San Francisco

Nob Hill is a neighborhood in San Francisco, California, centered on the intersection of California Street and Powell Street. It is one of San Francisco's 44 hills, and one of its original "Seven Hills." Prior to the 1850s, Nob Hill was called California Hill (after California Street, which climbs its steep eastern face). It was renamed after the Central Pacific Railroad's Big Four – called the Nobs – built mansions there.

Location

The actual peak of Nob Hill lies slightly to the northwest, approximately at the intersection of Jones and Sacramento Streets. South of Nob Hill is the shopping district of Union Square, the Tenderloin neighborhood, and Market Street. To the east is San Francisco's Chinatown and a little farther, the city's financial district. Northeast of Nob Hill is North Beach and Telegraph Hill. North of Nob Hill is Russian Hill, and eventually, the tourist-centered areas of the waterfront such as Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf.

History

The area was settled in the rapid urbanization happening in the city in the late 19th century. Because of the views and its central position, it became an exclusive enclave of the rich and famous on the west coast who built large mansions in the neighborhood. This included prominent tycoons such as Leland Stanford, founder of Stanford University and other members of The Big Four. For this reason, its early citizens were known as nabobs, which was shortened to nob, giving the area its eventual name.

Nob Hill (film)

Nob Hill is a 1945 technicolor film about a Barbary Coast saloon keeper starring George Raft and Joan Bennett. Part musical and part drama, the movie was directed by Henry Hathaway.

Plot

Sally Templeton sings at Tony Angelo's popular turn-of-the-century nightclub in San Francisco, which is called the Gold Coast. She is also in love with Tony.

One day, a young girl, Katie Flanagan, just off the boat from Ireland, arrives looking for her uncle. Informed that he has died, Katie is about to be sent back by Tony on the next ship until Sally persuades him to let the girl stay a while.

Tony falls for Nob Hill socialite Harriet Carruthers and agrees to support her brother, Lash, who is a candidate for district attorney. Business acquaintances are upset because Lash might shut down clubs like theirs if elected DA. Sally objects to the attention he is paying Harriet and takes a job singing in another club. Katie misses her terribly.

After the election, Tony discovers that Harriet has no interest in a future with someone like him. He grows despondent and turns to drink. Sally reconciles with Tony, who is also heartened by Lash's acknowledgment that he intends to investigate only law-breaking operations, not Tony's, which is respectable. All is well until Katie runs away, but after a desperate search in Chinatown for the child, Tony and Sally finally find her.

Nobø

Nobø started as NOrsk BØttefabrikk (the Norwegian Bucket Factory) in Lade, Trondheim, Norway 1918 - the name Nobø is a contraction of the original title. The factory originally produced only buckets, but later made several sheet iron products as well. It now manufactures desks, electric wall heaters and filing cabinets. The company developed and a new factory was built in Stjørdal. Nobø then produced electric heating accessories only, which it is still doing today.

In the 1990s the original Nobø factory was closed down and the area is now a housing estate of about 220 houses and flats, called Ingemann Torps Street or Nobø-tomta (Nobø-field). The area was planned by Heimdal Utbyggingsselskap and Pir II Architects.

Nobó

Nobó is a brand of dairy-free ice cream, manufactured in Dublin, Ireland and sold nationally.

Background

The name Nobó is a contraction of the Irish no bó, meaning "no cow". This refers to the lack of dairy ingredients in the ice cream.

The company was started by Brian and Rachel Nolan in 2012. In 2013, the couple took part in the Food Works programme by Bord Bia, Enterprise Ireland and Teasgasc. They introduced Nobó commercially through local farmer’s markets before making the transition to major stores at the start of 2014. By September, the product was available in 100 stores across Ireland, which led to take up by the major national retailer SuperValu and other stores. The ice cream is also sold in the United Arab Emirates.

Products

The main ingredients used in Nobó ice cream include avocado, coconut milk and honey as a natural sweetener. Nobó offers Chocolate and Toasted Almond, Vanilla and Coconut, Fresh Lemon, Passion Fruit, Mango and Irish Salted Caramel, available in 500ml and 100ml tubs. Nobó ice creams are also free from lactose, soya, gluten, cholesterol and eggs, as the founders cannot eat these ingredients found in conventional ice cream.
