Nightmare

A nightmare is an unpleasant dream that can cause a strong emotional response from the mind, typically fear but also despair, anxiety and great sadness. The dream may contain situations of discomfort, psychological or physical terror. Sufferers often awaken in a state of distress and may be unable to return to sleep for a small period.

Nightmares can have physical causes such as sleeping in an uncomfortable or awkward position, having a fever, or psychological causes such as stress, anxiety, and as a side effect of various drugs. Eating before going to sleep, which triggers an increase in the body's metabolism and brain activity, is a potential stimulus for nightmares. Recurrent nightmares may require medical help, as they can interfere with sleeping patterns and cause insomnia.

Etymology

The word "nightmare" derives from the Old English "mare", a mythological demon or goblin who torments others with frightening dreams. Subsequently, the prefix "night-" was added to stress the dream-aspect. The word "nightmare" is cognate with the older German term Nachtmahr.

Nightmares (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

"Nightmares" is the tenth episode of the first season of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The episode's teleplay was written by David Greenwalt, with a story by Joss Whedon, and directed by Bruce Seth Green. The episode originally aired on May 12, 1997, attracting a Nielsen rating of 2.5. The episode is about the students at Sunnydale High beginning to experience aspects of their worst nightmares while awake, leading the Scooby Gang's investigation to a young boy with a secret. However, before they can get to the bottom of things, they must face their own nightmares, which are rapidly taking over reality.

Summary

The episode begins with Buffy having a nightmare about going to The Master's lair and being choked by him. Buffy's mother Joyce shakes her awake, and as Buffy wakes up, she remembers that she is excited to be spending the coming weekend with her father. Buffy confides to Willow that she thinks she might have something to do with her parents' divorce. In a class, when the teacher asks Wendell to read from the text book, tarantulas crawl out of it. Buffy sees a boy standing in the door way, saying that he is sorry.

Flag

The creator of The Flag is unknown but his first appearance was in Our Flag # 2 (October 1941) (Ace Comics). and he also appeared in Four Favourites and Our Favourites.

The Flag

Disabled war veteran and flag-maker John Courtney ("Old Glory") finds a baby boy with a birthmark that resembled an American flag on his doorstep, on Flag Day. Believing there is something special about this child he names him Jim Courtney and raises him as his son. As Jim grow up he discovers from a dream that he has super speed and the strength of 100 men. Jim takes on the alias "The Flag" and uses his powers to help others.
