Nick Brown

Nicholas Hugh Brown (born 13 June 1950) is a British Labour Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Newcastle upon Tyne East since 1983. He has served as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Minister of State for Work and Pensions, Deputy Chief Whip, and was the Government's Chief Whip from October 2008 to May 2010.

Early life

Brown was born in Hawkhurst, Kent, and brought up in nearby Tunbridge Wells, attending Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys before studying at the University of Manchester. After graduating, he worked in advertising for Procter & Gamble, but in 1978 he moved to be Legal adviser to the Northern Region of the GMBATU, based in Newcastle upon Tyne. In 1980 he was elected to Newcastle City Council, representing Walker ward. His role in the union gave him a role in maximising the union's influence in Labour Party selections.

Political career

When Mike Thomas, the sitting Labour MP for Newcastle upon Tyne East, defected to the SDP, Brown was chosen as the new Labour Party candidate for the seat, easily retaining it for Labour at the 1983 general election. He joined Labour's front bench in 1985 as a spokesman on Legal Affairs; from 1988 he was a Treasury spokesman and from 1994 he shadowed Health.

Nick Brown (born 3 September 1961, in Warrington, Lancashire, England) is a tennis coach and former professional tennis player from the United Kingdom.

Brown won the British Under-21 championship in 1980 and the national senior singles championship three years later in 1983. After playing on the ATP tour in the early 1980s, he left the tour in 1984 to devote his time to coaching young British players, including Tim Henman, before returning to competitive play five years later.

Brown caused a sensation at Wimbledon in 1991. Ranked No. 591 in the world at the time, he faced the 10th seed and previous year's semi-finalist Goran Ivanišević in the second round and beat him in four sets, to the delight of the British crowd. He eventually lost in the third round to France's Thierry Champion.

Brown's career-high rankings were World No. 145 in singles and No. 42 in doubles.

Since permanently retiring from competitive tennis, Brown has served as coach of Britain's Fed Cup team.

Survivor is an American reality television show, based on the Swedish program, Expedition Robinson. Contestants are referred to as "castaways", and they compete against one another to become the "Sole Survivor" and win one million U.S. dollars. First airing in 2000, there have been a total of thirty-one seasons, which have been filmed on five different continents. The current season, Survivor: Kaôh Rōng, will premiere on February 17, 2016.

Contestants usually apply to be on the show, but the series has been known to recruit contestants for various seasons. For Survivor: Fiji, the producers had hoped to have a more racially diverse cast, and hoped that a more diverse group would apply after the success of the racially segregated Survivor: Cook Islands. When this did not happen, the producers turned to recruiting and in the end, only one contestant had actually submitted an application to be on the show. For the most part, contestants are virtually unknown prior to their Survivor appearance, but occasionally some well-known people are cast.

Nick Brown (academic)

Nicholas 'Nick' Brown is a British botanist and academic. He is the fourth and current Principal of Linacre College, Oxford, having been elected in 2009. He is also a lecturer in forestry at the University of Oxford.
