Nick Adams (actor)

Nick Adams (July 10, 1931 – February 7, 1968) was an American film and television actor and screenwriter. He was noted for his roles in several Hollywood films during the 1950s and 1960s along with his starring role in the ABC television series The Rebel (1959). Decades after Adams' death from a prescription drug overdose at the age of 36, his widely publicized friendships with James Dean and Elvis Presley would stir speculation about both his private life and the circumstances of his death. In an AllMovie synopsis for Adams' last film, reviewer Dan Pavlides wrote, "Plagued by personal excesses, he will be remembered just as much for what he could have done in cinema as what he left behind."

Early life

Adams was born Nicholas Aloysius Adamshock in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania to Peter Adamshock and Catherine Kutz. His father was a Ukrainian-born anthracite coal miner. In 1958 he told columnist Hedda Hopper, "We lived in those little company houses -- they were terrible. We had to buy from the company store and were always in debt and could never leave."

Nick Adams (born June 10, 1983) is an American musical theater actor and dancer.

Career

In 2006 Adams earned a BFA in musical theatre with a minor in dance from the Boston Conservatory of Music. In New York, he joined the international tour of the musical Chicago, later joining the Broadway cast. He was also in the original Broadway cast of The Pirate Queen. In 2007 he co-starred in a Broadway revival of A Chorus Line. In June 2009 he was in the Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls.

In 2010, Adams played one of the "Cagelles" in La Cage Aux Folles on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre. It starred Kelsey Grammer of "Frasier" television fame.

Adams appeared as one of the leading roles (Adam/Felicia) in the Broadway production of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, which opened at the Palace Theater on March 20, 2011 after a short run in Toronto at the Princess of Wales Theatre.

In 2010, Adams, who is gay, was a part of a PSA for the It Gets Better campaign with cast members from Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Adams, an African American, is the author of the book Making Friends with Black People, which he describes as a humorous but potent "how to guide" to bridging racial divides. Adams lives in Los Angeles, California with his wife.

Making Friends with Black People

In an interview with National Public Radio interviewer Ed Gordon, Adams says "boredom" was the impetus that drove him to write Making Friends with Black People. He was living in Tucson, Arizona at the time, a place without a substantial Black community. Adams notes that the comedic tone of his book allows people to be more "open" to some of the things he has to say, which might have otherwise come across as offensive.

In the book, Adams discusses many themes pertinent to the Black community, including his preference for the term "Black" over "African American". "It makes more sense than the others in every way", says Adams. "Phonetically, it's no contest. One syllable versus multi-syllabic hyphenates. Black wins hands down. Although initially it doesn't conjure the lofty bourgeois imagery of the other terms, it depicts a more realistic portrayal of who we really are."
