Nicholas Hammond

Nicholas Hammond (born May 15, 1950) is an American actor and writer who is perhaps best known for his roles as Friedrich von Trapp in the film The Sound of Music, and as Peter Parker/Spider-Man on the CBS television series The Amazing Spider-Man.

Early life and career

Hammond was born in Washington, D.C., the son of Eileen Bennett, an English actress, and Col. Thomas West Hammond, Jr. Hammond was 10 years old when he made his movie debut in Lord of the Flies. Shortly after filming Lord of the Flies, he appeared in the Broadway play The Complaisant Lover in 1961. Nine years later he appeared in his second Broadway play, Conduct Unbecoming.

Besides his subsequent work as Spider-Man, Hammond's most visible screen role was as Friedrich von Trapp in the 1965 hit The Sound of Music. In 1972, he appeared as Peter Linder in Skyjacked. In 1973, he made a guest appearance on The Brady Bunch, in the fourth-season episode #090 "The Subject Was Noses", as the high school hunk Doug Simpson who loses interest in Marcia after her tragic football accident. That year he also appeared in an episode of The Waltons, called "The Townie" as Theodore Claypool, Jr. After making the transition from juvenile to young leading man, he spent several seasons in daytime soaps such as General Hospital. He also appeared on many television shows of the 1970s including Hawaii Five-O.

Nicholas Hammond (ornithologist)

Nicholas 'Nick' Hammond is an English ornithologist and author, and a former director of the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. He was editor of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds' Birds magazine, and later its director of communications. He has written a number of books on, and speaks about, wildlife art.

Hammond undertook three stints as editor of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) magazine Birds, from volume 1 number 7 – vol. 5 no. 5 (November/December 1966—September/October 1974); vol. 6 no. 6 – vol. 6 no. 9 (Spring-Winter 1977) and vol. 10 no. 3 – vol. 11 no. 1 (Autumn 1984-Spring 1986). He also served as the charity's director of communications.

Nicholas Geoffrey Lemprière Hammond CBE, DSO (15 November 1907 – 24 March 2001) was a British scholar of ancient Greece and an operative for the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) in occupied Greece during World War II.

Life and writings

Hammond studied classics at Fettes College and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He excelled in his exams and also spent vacations exploring Greece and Albania on foot, acquiring knowledge of the topography and terrain, as well as fluency in Albanian. These abilities led him to be recruited by the Special Operations Executive during World War II in 1940. His activities included many dangerous sabotage missions in Greece (especially on the Greek island of Crete) as well as in Albania. As an officer, in 1944 he was in command of the Allied military mission to the Greek resistance in Thessaly and Macedonia. There he came to know those regions thoroughly. He published a memoir of his war service entitled Venture into Greece in 1983; he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and the Greek Order of the Phoenix.
